Is anyone here familiar with the South beach diet??? I have the guide, but was wondering if those protein bars (ie, Atkins, south beach solutions, etc) can be used w/ the program? The bars are low carb/high protein, made w/sugar substitute, so they seem to fit the plan but they pretty much seem like candy bars!!
Thanks!!

Weezy - I'm low carbing. Have kept 50 lbs off for over a year now doing it. HATE the bars, myself. Would rather lick my left rear tire than eat one, personally.
My boss has been doing the South Beach Diet, but he mostly snacks on veggies and cheese (he's also lost over 50 lbs). After doing Atkins and then reading SBD, I pretty much figured out that SBD was a much more well rounded WOE (way of eating) than Atkins....certainly don't go through the "cleansing" stage as harshly .
The main thing is to stay away from sugars and things touted as "low fat" - usually if it says low fat, they've added sugar for taste. Of course sugar = carbs.
SBD has a web site, and I'm sure you could post your ? there. I've found that those sites are VERY helpful, and a lot of the people on them can give you tips on snacks and such that are healthy....and probably not as $$$$ as those bars!
Sending you WOE support!

Hey Kimmy, thanks for responding. I lost a lot of weight at Dday , and realize that like everything else, it takes work to keep off!!!
Oprah said an amazing thing yesterday which clicked to me big time. It was something to the effect that she was a food addict and that she would have to battle this every day her whole life. I don't want to fall back into old patterns of eating for comfort.
I don't eat much meat, so Atkins never worked for me. I've had more success on SB. It seems to be a healthier way to eat and a better fit for what I like to eat.
Anyway, I guess those bars are probably junk anyway. I did check the SB website but I believe you have to join and pay $$$$$$$$ to be a member. I bought a few of the books.
Anyway, thanks!!!!

Weezy,
I am on the variation of the South Beach Diet. It's called The Son of a $itch Diet. Although it takes the complete and concentrated effort of your WS, it melts pounds off like you wouldn't believe. I am a strict adherent for the last 4 months and have dropped from 6' and 204lbs to 155lbs today. It has some side effects like depression, insomnia, suicidal ideation, nervous twitching and total wardrobe failure, it is very effective.
Just kidding. Couldn't let your straight line get away without(hopefully) some humor

Weezy, some of those protein bars are really pretty good [and healthy]. Just stay away from the cheap ones that have hydrogentated fats in them. The Atkins bars have quality ingredients and I just LOVE some of them. The chocolate mocha crunch is very good.
I have been on Atkins for 5 1/2 years now and have lost, and maintained, my weight loss all these years so I just love it! Course, my kidneys exploded, my arteries are all clogged and like Cymanca, I am severely depressed from giving up the cake and pie, but other than that it has been wonderful!

Cymanka, I like referring to it as the "A, depression weight loss plan." Unfortunately the weight loss was the only good thing that came out of H's A. Now that I have stabalized I've gained back 8 lbs. that I've lost. Darn!
weezy, go to prevention.com if you want a free support group. Also ivillage.com probably has one also. Good luck! CV

I was already losing weight this year on the 'moving about more eating less' diet and it was working pretty good. Another 35 lbs since d-day has taken my waist down 4 inches, my collar size down 1.5 inches.
I was already doing a gym routine that I have recommenced so hopefully a new physique will be a permanent benefit of this horrible thing.
Might help teh old attractiveness thing a bit for plan A too

Hello all , and how are you? I too subscribed to the "HOLY SH** MY LIFE IS CRUMBLING AND I"M DEVASTATED" diet and shed quite a bit of weight, after dday.
I had also just had baby #4, when I found out about the A (baby was 8 mos old), so I was working on losing it already, but then it hit the fan. No appetite, sick stomach, no sleep, you all know what I'm saying.
That was 19 mos ago. I've maintained pretty much, however I'd gained back/then re-lost 10 lbs. THen regained it again.... now working on losing it for good. For ME. And changing my pattern of soothing w/ food. Big time problem for me all my life.
I guess we all have our addictions,....huh?
Thanks for all your posts. Cymanca, sorry, you sound so down. Trust me, been there, done THAT. Two ddays, blah, blah, blah, blah.....it has been awful. All while I was pregnant with/then new mom to baby #4.
Anyway, at this point, I think I've learned a lot and grown alot. Good things for me. It has taken time, time time, but I am finally feeling better. WE are still not "there" but I feel like a person who can stand on there own two feet at least. I was strong enough to take all this. You'll be OK too, just hang in there. PRAY. I think I read a thread where your wife was finally turning around/seeking spiritual guidance? Forgive me if I got it wrong.
Believe it or not, your appetite will return one day!!! I swear!! I think I didn't eat for months....like a forkful here and there. But you can't and you don't go on like that forever. That is like, when you are in absolute panic mode. For me at least./
Take care all!!

Just jumping in on this. I have lost 35lbs on the 1/2 diet. This means I still eat the same, only 1/2 as much. Had started this before D-day, then I lost alot in weeks, but have continued now that I have regained some of my appetite. I think as with all diets, you have to be disciplined with yourself to maintain the loss. A friend of mine is doing the same & has lost over 40lbs & she has not had the stress that I have had.
