My children both had a friend sleep over last night..this has resulted in a minor apocolypse that is strangely contained within their rooms.[winks]
So today the fun of letting the children learn one of lifes harder lessons. The choices you make come with consequences you may not like, but you may not have a choice about paying. I feel no remorse whatsoever in enforcing this. I am so pleased that they are learning this at a tender age. They will spend a miserable few hours..first trying to negotiate..trying to stall..going through all of the stages of grief a few times, and finally acceptance. What a beautifull gift a messy room can be.
So as I was dealing with them, I was..not shocked, but strangely amused, and a little sad to hear the same words coming out of their little mouths that I read on these boards.
Example..My daughter tried to stomp her little foot
D "I'm not going to clean today!"
Mom "If you decide not to be responsible for your things, I will decide to take them away"
So what does she do? She goes and finds the things that she most values at this moment..brings them out and says.."I want to keep these, you can take all the rest"
While trying not to laugh I told her that this, sadly, is not an option..either she will be responsible for her things, or she will lose them..the only ability she has to choose the consequences will be when she chooses her actions.
So, that answers a question for me..yep, we are hard wired to like cake. We will use the same logic at 45 years of age that we will use at 5 years of age. Woe betide the sad individual who has forgotten these valuable lessons..sadder still the person who has been sheltered from them and never learned in the first place.
Just think of all situations in life where you wouldn't mind a little cake..a little leniency here, a little wiggle room there. What would come of it if you were to be cursed with your wish to have it? Would you continue to work if you could get away with not paying your bills? Would you borrow money and not repay it if you thought you could? What damage does cake eating, even in the mundane areas of life, do to you at your core? How is your perspective changed? What terrible lesson would I be teaching my children if I failed to let them know that to choose one thing, is to say no to something else by default. To open this door, is to shut that one..decide before you act which you will live with.
This applies to all people everywhere..WS and BS alike. I have heard it proposed that BSs too suffer a fog of their own..after giving this some consideration, I would have to agree that we are certainly just as susceptable, and that recovery from it is just as painfull. The withdrawl from your fantasy and the embracing of reality. The intense disorientation that accompanies going to bed in one place and waking to find yourself in another..a strange and unfamiliar place where the food tastes funny and the local customs are more than a little off putting. Common ground after all. So apparently, life is just full of things you don't want to do..but you have to do something, so try to do what you can live with having done and stop dreaming your life away..it is the surest way to end up with nothing.
