I'm have a unique and unmarketable talent for being able to see a plot arc from miles away..so most movie twists are a bit of a disappointment for me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> .
This talent also allowed me to grit my teeth nervously for months before my husband ever slept with OW because I could predict the probable outcome of his activities. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />
That other guy, btw, was Timothy Hutton...I've had a semi-crush on him since middle school. Did you ever see a movie called Ordinary People?
One of the things I liked about this movie was that the twist was not, for me anyway, the point of the movie. They have expertly put us 100% in the mind of our main character. Did you notice how manipulative and shallow the two other people appeared? Even when they were
saying all of the right things to make us sympathize with them..it fell on deaf ears for our hero, and for us as well. The use of
flashback imagery was outstanding..I suspect someone on that production team knows all too well just when and how those little mental movies play out.
The OM was presented to us from the perspective of the BS as well. Watch again and see how
other people respond to him. He is not the hairball buffoon that he appears [rubbernecker!] to us. He is clearly a successfull and attractive man. They played with light and angles to portray to us what this man means to JD, his face always slightly off center..his carefull words and expensive suits do not impress apon us that he is a reasonable and desireable man..they make him look exactly as the BS sees him. OUTSTANDING. Most movies would have tried to convey that by using a slack jawed mouth breather as the OM. It has less effect that way, IMO.
Classic WS fog talk...kind of makes you wonder if SK ever visited this site for reference materials, no? The wife tries to portray herself as a woman who has simply moved on in life..but she keeps calling her husband..even from the OM house. She calls and asks what if..she cries..she demands..she has an agenda all mixed together with her other
stuff . They made a complex character out of what could very well have been a mary sue horror victim.
Casting was very well done, imo. No one could have pulled off the duplicity of the role as well as JD..this is his forte. The shooter character as well..we can see his creator in his words and deeds...his body language..lots of chewy goodnes to be had here.
I think this movie was poorly marketed. It was not sold to it's intended audience. It isn't really a horror flick so much as a character study. People who go in expecting thrills and chills will be disappointed. People who want to enjoy an excellent demonstration of how a kind and reasonable man might slowly descend into madness didn't see it..it wasn't aimed at them. Too bad. I would have liked to have seen it on the big screen. Guess they had to make way for XXX instead. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
