Hi...

I've been lurking, learning, and posted a few comments, but I cannot post freely.

Does anyone know how to detect if they're being monitored, such as a key logger, or any other means?

Does anyone know of any good sites that could help me in this area?

I do not know much about computers at all, but WS does. I can't even type the reason for my questions, until I know my computer is not being monitored.

Please, can anyone help me?

Thanks

What in heaven's name is the WS checking up on you for?

What on earth are they trying to find out you are doing? Saving your marriage?

I have no idea about spyware but a lot of people here know a lot about it.

Isleepwithacat, you should be able to come here in perfect safety. I know you've been reading and the wonderful people here could help you so much.

How much is "not much"?

Do you know how to look at "system information"-->"software"-->"running tasks", in the accessories folder? If you saw the programs that are running, would you have a good idea of what most of them are? These are the programs that are listed with you bring up the Windows Task manager (alt+ctrl+del) and click on the "processes" tab.

Do you know how to view hidden files and system files?

Do you know how to search for files that were modified on a certain date? Once you had that list of files, do you think you'd be able to have a general idea of what those files are?

Are you familiar with the setup of your own computer so that if you went through each folder on your disk, you'd be able to tell which ones are ones you are not familiar with?

I am not sure there is anything that can detect a keylogger similiar spyware (there might be, I don't know), but there are other ways to see what's going on with your computer.

Not a techy yet, slowly learning the ways though.

Pressing Ctrl,Alt & Delete simultaneously ONCE& only once (if you do it twice system closes down) shows up programmes that a running. Scroll down to see what you've got. Don't know if this would show up stealth programmes though.

What happened to us was weird, someone outside of our home set up spywear on all our e-mails, & internet activity. H (at the time WH) was freaked by breech. Shut down nearly every activity & disabled online conx unless he was here to 'supervise'.

Sugg: search over the net use google etc. looking for anti-spyware, 2nd sugg: get your own spy ware for you alone.

Just thoughts hope they're of use.

I don't know where you live, but around here there are plenty of public libraries and they all have computers for use by the public.

Just saying that if you feel your home computer is bugged, you can always make a trip to the library.

Course, if it IS bugged, then WS already knows you come here and knows you are Isleepwithacat and they will just read your posts.

Change your name and some details and post from the library? Just a thought.

I used spyware on my computer and the only way to detect it was if someone else tried to put on a second copy. In that case, it would say the spyware was already installed.

Maybe I'll reinstall it and see if the Alt Ctl Del trick has it show up. The manufactueres of the software claim it wouldn't.

First, thank you, everyone, for your replies.

Second, I so apologize for such a huge time gap.

And third, I'm still in the same boat, and sinking.

In my desperation, I will add this... H has computer upstairs, I have computer downstairs, they are networked together. Does networking make a difference in trying to discover if our computers are being monitored?

I honestly do not expect computer 101 from anyone, but maybe someone might know of a computer web forum similar to this one? I'll sure take anything anyone has... whether it be how-to's or sites.

He claims he isn't, but I suspect he is. I think it's kind of like, "keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer". I know I'm not the "enemy", but for lack of a better word, I left it as is.

"What on earth are they trying to find out you are doing? Saving your marriage?"

Checking on him. (In my opinion)

"Isleepwithacat, you should be able to come here in perfect safety. I know you've been reading and the wonderful people here could help you so much."

I agree. And yes! the people here *are* wonderful!

Yes, I do know about Ctrl, Alt, Delete. When I do that, I recognize most of what's running. I don't know what they are, but recognize most of the names. There have been times when I didn't recognize some of them, and wh told me it's adware, spyware - he's referring to the spyware type stuff that various sites try to stick in one's computer. Gator is very bad about doing that, and I used to have Gator, but not anymore.

He does take precautions for viruses. He likes to use avi anti-virus (I prefer Norton), and then a firewall, and then he also likes to use Spysweeper. Those are the ones that I know about anyway.

"What happened to us was weird, someone outside of our home set up spywear on all our e-mails, & internet activity. H (at the time WH) was freaked by breech. Shut down nearly every activity & disabled online conx unless he was here to 'supervise'."

Hmmm... INTERESTING!! What is "conx"? How did you detect the spyware? And how did you know that it came from outside your home? Do you remember what it was called? How did you remove it? Did you think that your then-wh could've installed it, for his own agenda?

"Sugg: search over the net use google etc. looking for anti-spyware, 2nd sugg: get your own spy ware for you alone."

Great suggestions! I have googled for anti-spyware, but it's so overwhelming & rather confusing. I will continue to do that though.
I am quite interested in what you say about getting my own spyware for myself. Do you mean to install it on the computer so that it logs all I do? Which by the way, is fine & dandy. What I'd really like to know is, if I did that, would it show me if he had spyware on here?

Yes, I could go to the library, but I do have access to a computer outside our home. The thing is though, it takes me so dang long with this stuff, that I always do it during the night, so I have plenty of time with no interruptions at all. I've always been a night person, so that doesn't raise any suspicions at all.

"Course, if it IS bugged, then WS already knows you come here and knows you are Isleepwithacat and they will just read your posts."

Yes, I thought of that too. That's why I haven't gone into details at this point. If he ever came across my user id, I am certain that he'd know it was me, because... Isleepwithacat.

Boy, I sure do sound like a drama queen. But please believe me when I say that I am not. I'm just desperate.

"I used spyware on my computer and the only way to detect it was if someone else tried to put on a second copy. In that case, it would say the spyware was already installed."

Now THAT is interesting! I know when I add fonts to windows, if it's a duplicate font, it won't add it unless I check the little box to "replace" it. I never thought about it, but, yeah, the same thing would happen with a spyware program. But because there is soooooo much spyware available, would that be a needle in a haystack thing?

Well, I do know about alt+ctrl+del, and have used it. A few of the programs that come up, I know are fine & dandy. I randomly get a few unknowns, but they aren't always the same ones. Spyware? Adware? Shareware? ?ware?

"Do you know how to view hidden files and system files?"

No, I do not.

Oh ***PLEASE*** share with me...

Again, thank you so much for your kindness.

How to identify spyware:

There are two well reputed software awailable to download free of charge from the internet. They are
-Adaware
-Spyboot

(I am not shure of the spelling. This is from memory only.) Adaware is the easiest to use. I believe spyboot finds more.
Both are well reputed in the computer magasines.
Make a search for these names, and the word "download". Then you should find sites from where you can download them. Good luck to you!
