In a past post you said you pulled some info from your W's hard drive.

Can one go into the hard drive and pull up past emails from along time ago? I had heard you had to tear the computor apart to get this info.

My W said the OM's wife found out about them and called her last year threatening to call me. They convinced her not to, said the A was over.

HA! Lasted another YEAR!!

Been thinking lately maybe this was all bull. Maybe the OM's W doesn't know. I would love to let her know what a gem she is married to.

Or anyone else that is I.T. savvy.

What Operating System? (Windows 98, ME, XP)

What Email prog? (Outlook Express?)

What ISP? (AOL, Compuserve, etc)

Windows 98

Both Internet explorer and outlook express are on the computer. We now use outlook express for our emails.

She had AOL for her "private emails". She has since deleted that mailbox.

A possible exception would be if the hard drive has been reformated.

If she used AOL for the emails you'd like to get to, then you're probably out of luck. Those messages were stored on AOL's servers and most likely were never downloaded to your computer.

If an email client software (Outlook, etc) had been used to download the email, then it might be possible to dig into the OS and retrieve them. But with AOL, they (in the past anyway) make it difficult to actually download email and store it.

I was waiting for someone like high_road to reply. I thought AOL kept mail on their servers but I wasn't sure.

I tryed a couple things on my '98 computer but nothing easy worked out.

You can clik "Start", go up to "Find", clik "Files or Folders" and search your hard drive for *.eml

That only brought a few things up on mine. Only notes I saved on purpose for attached pictures or something.

Neither of the above statements are true.

If Outlook was used you can try doing a search for *.dbx or *.pst files.

If found, you could try importing them into another copy of Outlook.

Too difficult for a low techy? Do I need to find a high tech person?

I didn't even understand what Jilliana was speaking of. Importing is always a mystery.

If you are in any stage legally, separation or divorce, your attorney can subpoena any and all emails given the adresses that are known from WEB BASED EMAIL SERVERS ( your email is accessable from any computer). Almost everyone, especially the big boys AOL, Yahoo etc keep emails on their servers for an extended period of time.

If that is not the answer, go get a key tracker or email tracker software. Do a search on google or scan this site. There has been plenty of discussion regarding this subject.

Only ask for what you REALLY REALLY want to see. The experience can and will be unbelievably brutal.

Just saying it's possible and that others are wrong doesn't help krusht at all. Give him some suggestions if you know of something.

But I will say if your W didn't use an email client to download her email you will not be able to find anything on your computer. It works the same with with any other web based email. You check and view email on the hosts server. All actions are performed remotely over the internet and not on your local computer.

So really what you need to know is how the email was checked. At aol.com or through an email client.

**edit to say that the above is true if you care to make a legal matter of this. Sounds more like you're just wanting to know if something is possible for you to do yourself.**

Does the email tracker software dig up PAST emails?

There are no more emails. NC is going on and W says she doesn't even think about the A or OM anymore. (Dday was 05/31/04)

I seem to be thinking about it enough for both of us.

Yeah, I hear you. Do I REALLY, REALLY want to see any of that crap.

Her mother is dying of cancer, so because of all the stress of that, we don't talk about the A. Don't ever bring it up.

No, an email tracker will not dig up old emails. Again if your emails are downloaded onto your computer there is always a chance a recovery utility like Norton Utilities can recover them. But only if that specific area on the hard drive has not been written over by other info.

Briefly, when you erase a file on your computer all the computer does is to change the the first letter on that file( cheating.com to Xheating.com).That is how and why you can recover a lot of "erased info". The police do this all the time on computers, eg Michael Jackson, Scott Peterson, etc. If you are really sharp you erase using Department of Defense techniques which will change the file name AND write over the entire file 7-10 times.

I agree with Cymanca.

AOL can be subpoenaed. It’s usually not necessary though except in civil or criminal cases.

A lot of information is stored in a computer of which most users are unaware. You can usually tell what a computer was used for, when it was used, what the user has done on the Internet (and when), and recover much of what the user wrote, read or viewed on the computer.

To do this you need advanced techniques, usually a computer forensic expert. It is something that I would not recommend trying to do yourself.
