I don't have a fish dddddddiiiiiiisssssss big story, but I've a funny fish story.

I grew up in the Dallas area, in Denton, TX. There is a lake between Denton and Dallas that used to be called Lake Dallas, but some fool decided that since Lewisville was growing so fast to change the name to Lake Lewisville (REAL people who've lived there long enough still know it as Lake Dallas, tho).

My uncle had a friend that had one of those cool HUGE pontoon boats docked at one of the docks there. You've got to understand that my cousins and sister and me could nearly all of us could swim before we could walk. Swimming off a dock or a boat in the middle of who knows how deep of water was no big for any of us. The only thing was, the owner of the boat warned us that a gar (big, long, tooth filled butt ugly not worth eating fish) had made his home under the docked boat (btw, in this area they'd sink old Christmas trees to recycle them and there'd be lots of places for fish to party and have fish sex and lots of fishy babies). So we'd dive off that boat, sometimes deep enough to feel the pine trees under us (it was maybe 10-12 feet down). That was a littl freaky....if you went that far, your first thought would be "That gar's gonna get me).

We'd also fish off the dock. Well, my little sister got it into her head she was gonna catch that gar and told everyone so (my little sis was all of 50 lbs soaking wet at that point). We were fishing with those old timey cane poles. The rest of us had gotten bored with catchin nothing and were wandering around the docks looking at the boats...then Amy hollers, "I got it, I got it." Picture a skinny little girl with a cane pole who is standing at the end of the dock. The pole is about bent in half. Amy is glowing with excitement. She takes 3 steps backward to try to get the fish in, that fish drags her 2 steps closer to the edge. My dad is jumping over ice chests and tackle boxes to get to her. 3 steps back, 2 steps forward. With the help of my dad and my uncle, they get that fish in...shore'nuff, it was a BIG OLE gar. Uglier than homemade sin and twice as mean looking. They cut the line....here's the clincher....My dad has this fish on the dock, the line is cut and he and my uncle are debating on how to remove the hook....if you've seen a gar, you'd know it' be like Steve Irwin and his stupidly taunting the rattler while the reptilian beastie is thinking huevos might be great for breakfast. I guess the gar got fed up with the debate because he does this kind of forward tuck flip thingy (the judges would've given him a 5.6, because his tail wasn't pointed), snaps at my dad's leg....dad jumps 5 feet SERIOUSLY straight up into the air and the fish flops gracefully into the water with nary a splash.

That is our family's fav. fish story. I can still vision my dad jumping halfway to the moon....It may be the one that got away, but a 50 lb little girl caught herself a gar using a cane pole - beat that!

LMAO!

ST: I'm not much of a fisherman. Took the kids out twice this year. I think I caught one trout (barely legal) and the kids didn't get anything. My grandfather was a great fisherman. (He'd go 4-5 times a week. Mostly for pan fish-sunnies, rock bass, bass, etc. He'd keep track of how many he got and usually it was in the 1-2 thousands per year.)

I think the biggest rock bass I ever caught was 14", a I got a pike that was about 19". I don't think it was legal, but I was too young to know.

One of the best days fishing I ever had was the day that Mike Schmidt hit 4 HR's against the Cubs and the Phillies beat them 24-23. I don't remember how many fish we caught, but we had fun catching em and listening to the ol ballgame on the radio!

Oh looky, I killed the thread again. Sorry Starz not your fault this time.

Kimmy: I didn't mean to ignore your fish story. I liked it very much and thought I should tell you.

RH,
Wow 1-2 thousand a year that is alot of fillets

a 14" rock bass is huge. Pike have to be 23" for the most part in michigan to keep. but in some lakes you can keep them any size.

Not much of a baseball fan. I think it is a very boring sport. I think they shoul liven it up a little and let them throw the ball at the runner to get them out like kick ball

Boring just like Nascar. I think they should take off the restricter plates let them drive any style car they want with the biggest fricken engine they can put in them not let them wear seat belts or helmets and the man with the biggest balls wins

(Edited for spelling)

Fillets? What are those? No really, I know, but my grandfather didn't believe in wasting all that meat. My grandmother would fry them up. Yummy, but I hated picking out all those d*** fish bones.

You're going to have the Mayor on your butt for that Nascar statement. (But it is true.)

I will call you Dede - I am sorry for your pain. Wish I could help you - you've done so much to help me and keep me cheerful through this mess. Chin up, girl - we are strong women. We will be ok, somehow. God will point the way. I am sure of it.

Haven't seen any places to fish around here... Saw some locals casting nets in one of the rivers, but we don't get outside the wire much and when we do, we try to stay on the roads... lots of mines over here!

I'm one of those redneck bass fishing nuts... can't wait to get back and hit Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn!

Hey Starz,

Nice try, but I'm still here. hehehehe

I don't think I ever got a chance to tell you, that the other day when you posted all that nice stuff about Texas (hills, streams, wildlife and such), I really liked that. Thanks. (It kinda reminded me of my family farm here in PA.)

I'm afraid of the dark, now I've lost my light .... It was so beautiful and shone so bright ..... so swiftly I bid you all goodnight .....

Miss all you Idiots {{{{OLD & NEW}}}}

Brown

PS I know it wasn't a cheer - just a depressing little poem - but I still get to rhyme (very weak smile )

Thanks Mayor - and how you doin'???

Thanks RIF - prayers for you too!!!

I can't even begin to call all of you by your names - mostly b/c you keep changing them

I like Brown - it's not as depressing as black and always compliments brighter colors in the crayon box.
