As we were talking earlier about being Southern and all.
I got to thinking about a funny. The OW in my situation was raised here, but she is a transplant as is her family. So she is not really Southern and the best thing of all is she is not a Southern cook. I'd venture to say she couldn't cook a pone of cornbread if she had a recipe to follow. Also, I doubt she owns a black iron skillet and wouldn't know what to do with it if she had it. Ha!
I laugh everytime I think about it. H@!l, she probably doesn't even make sweet tea! And she probably would die before she'd put bacon in a batch of butter beans. That is, if she ever even cooks butter beans. If my H hadn't showed some sense and stayed with me, he might die of hunger.
Anyway, just thought you and some others might find this funny. I sure do!
"American by birth -- Southern by the grace of God." (no offense to you non-southern folk)

Well, good Lord, naivegirl, what in heaven's name does the girl eat, then???
I bet she even says "yams" instead of "sweet potatoes." And I wonder if she knows they're best made into pie???

PM,
I'll bet she does say yams. I never thought of that. I don't know what she eats. H says she eats a lot of salad.

I read you naivegirl, loud and clear. I'm from Mississippi too. That's why I asked.

naivegirl, nor can she make GRAVY or cut up a chicken proper!
You don't know how well timed your post is because my EX, who left me in 1999 for an older yankee gal, called me tonight to ask me how to make gravy for chicken fried steak. [he has to make the cfs, because his yankee gal is clueless as to what this is]
But sheeeesh, how do you TELL someone how to make gravy? It's not like it comes from a recipe, you just know when it's right and I find it impossible to describe texture. I just know how much drippins to leave in the pan and I just know how much milk to add. I have never measured it! I guess thats what he gets for going off with a yankee gal. [ November 26, 2004, 10:20 PM: Message edited by: MelodyLane ]

Y'all are making me homesick. That really is funny, naive girl, just thinking about a yankee trying to feed a good old boy from the South. Just one Thanksgiving without cornbread dressing would send them running for home.
My husband and I still eat "southern" even though it's very hard to find okra where we live now. What I would give for some fried okra right now!
My H's OW probably did cook southern, but I'm the one who has his mom's and grandma's recipes.

Very funny! I forgot about gravy. Yes, that would be hard to tell someone how to make. Yes, that is what he gets for running off with a Yankee girl. Comfort foods come from the heart not a recipe. (and you learn that kind of cooking from your mama!)
I know she probably can't make gravy. And I think she only eats boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You sure can't make chicken and dumplings with those!

Southern Gravy (Recipe provided ONLY for ML's Ex and his YG)
First, you will need the proper cookware and utensils. Get your iron skillet out of the oven, where it has been stored, upside down, for drying purposes. Also, get your grandma's gravy-stirrin' spoon from the hook over the stove, right there by the flyswatter.
Pour a little bit of bacon grease in the skillet and get it good and hot. Shake a handful of salt and pepper in the grease for flavoring.
When it's hot enough, stir some flour in it and make a paste. Hint: if you have flour left over from coating steaks for chicken fry, that will work best of all!
Soon as the paste gets hot, pour about half a skillet of whole milk in there and stir it up till it starts to thicken and smell real good.
Don't cook it too long, now, or it'll get too thick and maybe even lumpy.
Variation: fresh tomatoes out of the garden, added into the gravy, makes a real good red-eye. Pour it on homemade biscuits, and you've got breakfast. Or any other meal -- it's all good!
Oh, yeah. Also, never wash out the skillet with soap. Ruins it. Clean it with water, season it with oil, and turn it upside down in a hot oven to dry.
I'm hungry now, PM

Hey Naivegirl & Susan... I grew up in MS... except for my time on active duty, I've lived in the south all my life! (Melody Lane - I lived in TX for 12 years and I consider that the South too!)... we now live in Louisiana and plan on being there for a good long time...
Boy, some fat back and grits with red-eye gravy would be good right about now!

I made it both ways this Thanksgiving, the Cajun way and the Texas way. yummm
