*Beware of Burnout* Lemon !

Before I went back to grad school to do RNP studies ... I worked in NICU as an RN. A code on a 2 lb. premie is the pits ... and since the unit was busy ... codes were sometimes done in front of parents, grandparents of the other babies ... because we did not have time to clear the room ... we just did what we had to do and the peripheral vison of what was going on around us became cloudy. It was all focused attention on the problem ... work like a well-oiled machine ... no emotional input at all .... until later, in my own heart and mind.

How I knew I was burned out ... my dreams. I dreamed of codes where none of the equipment functioned, where the neonatologist was stuck doing a different code and I was intubating and sticking in chest tubes myself... sweaty stress-filled nightmares where nothing went right.

Lemonman ... maybe you could spend some time with the hospital support liaison who can work with you about some burn out stress. You have an awful lot on your plate !

But she knows the difference between life and death, and most of the rest of us don't have to deal with that very often, if ever.

My hat is off to anyone who can do this work, day in, day out, and remain sane. I was an interim Y2K project manager in the late 1990's and had to spend most of my time anticipating and worrying about catastrophies that might happen. I realized I'm NOT cut out for being in that mind set all the time, and so declined to apply for the permanent position.

You have my respect, LM, even though I live it vicariously through my friend, I have heard this type of story before and it breaks my heart even though I wasn't there.

Cymanca,

I grew up in Euclid - went to local college and law school. Worked there for 4 years after law school and then moved to Houston for a job with corporate America. I used to be really into the Browns - unfortunately, this is DEFINITELY NOT their year. I have a good friend who works with the Browns organization and he said he thought Davis was history after the Baltimore game...if not at the end of the season, I will begin to wonder...

Brit,

I grew up in the Collinwood area and graduated from St. Joe's High at a time long ,long ago. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />

I agree Butch Davis is history. I am afraid that his learning process will be at the expense of the Brown's organization and he will make a fine coach wherever he ends up. Memories of Bill Belicheck.

Cymanca,

I guess this is old home day! I'm a Regina girl...I am very familiar with the Collinwood area as I belonged to a Croatian dance group that practiced at the Croatian Home on Waterloo. I would guess by your use of the word "caca" earlier in this thread that you are Slovenian? My folks have since moved out to Richfield, but I was just over in Euclid on Wednesday visiting friends.

lemonman,

Just a reply to you regarding what happened in the ER.

I dropped all and left my family to take care of my father the last 3 months of his life, teminal lung cancer.

There was a wonderful hospice nurse. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I did most of the care for my father, but, in the end, this wonderful nurse came. My father was struggling, had asperated (sp?) several times, was refusing his pain meds in the quantities he needed them for whatever comfort they could afford him. Anyway, I got a pain pump for him in the end.

She came, as I knew my daddy was close to the end. He was struggling and I pushed the button on the pump. The nurse said this is good. Then she sent me to my room and told me, 'you have been the nurse all this time, now it is time for you to be the daughter. I will come get you when it is his time. Go to your room and relax.'

Anyway, she never came and got me until 5 minutes after my father died. He did struggle with death, although he never woke up.

This wonderful nurse told me that she had watched her mother die like this and had never gotten over it. She did not want me to have that image forever burned in my brain. God bless her for that. As it was it took me 2 years to remember my father in any context besides lying in that bed so very ill. But now I am able to remember him when he was not ill. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I support you in your belief that the family members should NOT witness these terrible deaths. God bless you in your work, in your recovery of yourself.

Cymanca, sorry about your mom, do try to focus on her at this time, as it is HER time now.

Praying for all of you,

Love in Christ,
Miss M

When I was a brand new spanking nursie...

worked a cancer unit....

a wife stayed by her husbands side...
he had lung cancer...
on a cold dark 3-11 shift under my care I went in to sunction his lungs...

pretty routine skill for a cancer nurse...
but
very taxing on the patient...though the end result is much greater comfort...

but...
I didn't ask her to leave the room...and when cleaning up my supplies I saw the look on her face...and in her eyes....

lesson learned...
stays with me ...
haunts me a little...now and then...

many moons later now the supervisor of a hospital...it is my job when there to respond to all critical emergencies...
weekends, holidays, nights.....

my heart always goes out to the nurse asked to go take and be with the family...for no matter how difficult the 'code' none has a harder job than staying with loved ones....

and under my instruction someone always goes to be with them....

after a code much paperwork needs done..and in code review the nurse/staff that went with that patient always gets noted...with great appreciation...

we try to do our best...
life throws us curve balls...
I don't think God lets or makes it happens...
I think somedays he feels as sad as we do...

lemonman,

Thank you for your kindness. My father died in 1995. I have had 7 blessed years of memories without that vision of his illness. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I would just ask that God will bless you and that you will find the happiness and peace that you so much deserve.

I want to thank you for your posts. You are refreshing. I believe some people have sought your opinion because Plan A can not go on forever.

FYI, I plan A'd for 6 weeks before I had had ENOUGH. My FWS KNEW who I was, and it took all of 3 days of plan B before FWS was back with me, abet, some foginess for 2 months. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Thank you for your kindness to all on this board. You are here for a reason. God Bless you and I pray for your healing. You are WORTHY. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

I am truly touched by your kidness to me. When I read your post, I now know that some of what I say "sinks in". Thank you so much for validating my stance here. I am not perfect and am struggling like everyone else. I really want to be a beneficial member of this board and not always have to be the dissenter..... <img border="0" alt="[Teary]" title="" src="graemlins/teary.gif" /> Either way, I am growing in all of this. Last night some of the companionship of this board helped me get through a long night. Thanks once again.

lemonman,

Thank you.

I am the 'thread killer' here, don't post much, no one here knows 'my story'.

Somehow when I tell people to step back, try to think what is the healthiest thing for them to do for themselves, marriage and children, no one responds. LOL. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

I hope someday you have the wherewithal to tell your story. I do, however, understand if you do not. Some posters are very hard on others.

I never judge, I just try to help, as you do. God bless you for that.

Also, listen to Orchid. She has given me a much needed 2x4 at one time. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="images/icons/blush.gif" />

Anyway, just remember that you are WORTHY. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

There are a lot of repercussions for ongoing contact within the Plan A. A person can suffer for years. I am a perfect example. You don't want to even know. LOL.

Don't have the tv on today, hoping your Eagles won.

Keep up the good work.

Cymanca, sorry for the thread jack. Praying for you, mom, and all you are going through. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Orchid: Your post really touched me. From a patient’s standpoint, we often don’t realize how much those in the medical profession do get affected by being in daily contact with such pain and suffering. The question you raised is one I had asked also. Though I had learned the answer many years ago, when my grandmother died, I asked that question again. I was angry at the fact that nothing more c/b done for her. I was not angry at the doctors, just angry at life and well the one I know is the culprit of initiating our pain and suffering.

Please understand what you are about to read are my personal viewpoints. I am not attempting to preach or teach. I would like the opportunity to give an answer to your important question because no matter what are personal beliefs are, the questions are still the same. “I kept thinking, if there is a God, how the hell can he let this happen???”

How much of what is in our life has order and a purpose? Actually, a lot. From the time we get up in the morning until we retire at night, we depend on the consistent pattern of time, regulation of our air, sources of our water, etc. Simply put, we take a lot for granted but these things and many others who that someone with a higher intelligence took the time and care to help us by creating the earth in an orderly productive manner so we can live comfortably. We don’t have to spend time thinking about how to breathe, how to sleep, etc. Yet if that one is sooo intelligent, how come there is also sooo much suffering and death. I notice how much of the animal kingdom are resigned to death. Except for instances like the elephant that mourns over their mate, most animals accept the loss and move on. Humans are not like that. It is hard for most of us to let go of a loved one and often hurt even for those we don’t know. Why is that? I learned it is because man was made with the desire to live, not live and die. Death was not part of our original makeup and so when it happens even now, it is foreign to our souls making it hard to accept.

When one’s heart is hardened, it is much easier to not feel the pain but most of us are not like that. We really were not made to have a hardened heart. We were made to give and feel love and to personally see the loss of a human life, touches many of quite deeply.

So to the 1st part of your question about is there a God. Proven physical science supports that what we see around us was brought about by an intelligent designer. Now if this is true and the designer is intelligent enough to create the earth and life upon it, why is death for humans allowed? What purpose does it serve?

I will share an illustration to help understand my viewpoint. Just like an A is not something I would wish on anyone and I know that I as a BS did not cause the A yet myself and my family were deeply affected by it…… the A happened because an outside influence who was greedy, wanting more than they had the right to want (wanted my H) and a WS who became greedy (wanting more than his M) combined their efforts to lose the one thing our family held sacred. Our trust and love.

Back in the beginning, the first couple were like the WS, the creator was like the BS, those that participated in the creation were like the family, the culprit who seduced the 1st woman was like the OP. Greed was the driving factor then and now. The loss of the ability to live forever is similar to the loss of the trust and love when d/d hits. Is the trust and love recoverable? Yes. It takes the cooperation of the BS, family and WS. Likewise, the hope of mankind once again having the opportunity to live forever will take the cooperation of the same type of key players: mankind, the creator and his associates. The culprit who started the greed and is not interested in seeing mankind really enjoy the earth as it was originally intended (beautiful paradise conditions over the entire earth), well that one w/b soon eliminated. The same source that created this earth and it’s order, has a plan to bring back what was originally lost.

Mankind was originally created to live forever. Our bodies show the ability to heal in many ways. Even with the aging process our bodies fight to overcome the illnesses that attack our bodies. Through science, we have learned much about our lives and all life around us. We still have a lot to learn. The creator is still willing to teach us that and much more. It is not a mystery nor illogical, just have to have a good attitude and an open mind. Questioning the truth until it makes sense is important. That is how we learn and grow.

I can provide references to back up the above info. What I wrote was in my thoughts. Because I learned this a long time ago, when I had to deal with the A issue, each person’s role fell in place much easier. I was able to get a clearer picture of where I and others stood. I am not deliberating making the WS and OP t/b the bad guys. They did that by themselves. Of course sometimes the WS pursues the OP, so my illustration is not for every A situation.

When I lost my grandmother, my pain was deep. I do understand that mankind has been on a downhill spiral away from human imperfection and death is one of the inevitable consequences. What I have learned is who is really responsible for these consequences and how steps have already been outlined on how sickness, pain and death w/b eliminated. Medical science has done marvels to help us stay alive. For that I know I am grateful. It is also good to know that the greatest intelligent source started a plan to bring back perfection for mankind along with turning the entire earth into beautiful paradise. Where things like smog, pollution, oil spills, disasters, war ravaged country sides, etc. will be eliminated and we will be taught how to use the earth properly.

Just like I look forward to a healthy recovery for our M, I look forward to seeing living forever not be just a dream but a reality.

Thanks for the opportunity for letting me share this with you. I know I don't usually post much to you but I do read your posts and appreciate that you are able to help others.

Aloha,
L.

Well it took me awhile, couldn't cut and paste my info....not sure if it's operator error <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> or not. I am just sharing some info I had and if it helps, great. If not, no hard feelings. ok? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> I have a brief recap from your prior post followed by my response.

Cymanca: my 80 y/o mom has been diagnosed with supranuclear progressive bulbar degeneration. My neuro friends have given her 1-3 not so pleasant years. My goal is to make her as happy as I can while I still have her. My biggest regret was that I never videotaped her talking about her early life with my father(they met and married in the concentration camps during WWII). With her Dx, her biggest problems are dysphonia and dysphagia and it is getting worse fairly rapidly.

Orchid: The research I found references Parkinson’s disease. My aunt who is 81 is has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

I found some information on how magnetic therapy has helped patients with nervous disorders like arthritis, parkinson’s, MS, etc. I have started using some of this magnetic therapy process on my aunt. It is non-evasive with her current treatment. Some of the experiences I read said that magnetic mattress pads, pillows, sole inserts, necklaces, magnetized water and some massage units were used. Like I mentioned earlier, I am not in the medical profession so I don’t have all the medical jargon to explain this but have read experiences from doctor’s who have successfully used this with their patients with Parkinson’s.

A neurologist in NC (Dr. Larry Pierce) spoke at an energy medicine seminar which was about a new magnetic energizing study called MME (Molecular Magnetic Energizing). They were working with the FDA on these studies in regards to Parkinsons, Cerebal Palsy and IV disc disease. Part of the treatment included sleeping under a magnetic field. One case showed a 90% improvement and remained stable after only a few weeks. Others have used magnetic mattress pads and other devices and found similar results.

I have started to use some of those magnetic aids on my aunt. I can only go to visit her once a week so our progress is a bit slower. She tends to lean to her right side without even realizing it. She is on a fixed income so the products I use on her are the ones I can purchase and loan her. My parents are also using some of this type of treatment. More for muscular related items. My dad said he noticed a difference and my mom says he isn’t snoring at night. LOL!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I couldn’t cut and paste the info I had. It is on an acrobat reader file and for some crazy reason I can’t save it to a word doc. I have another article from some doctors which explain the magnetic therapy info in greater detail. I can make a copy of CD and send it to you or if you can wait when my H comes back (s/b by 12/15) he s/b able to figure out how to move these articles around.

Just wanted to share this with you in case any of this c/b helpful for your mother. My parents were both quite skeptical at first but now look forward to my visits and their free massage treatments. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
