A real tear jerker. Just saw a TV spot about a Marine casualty from Iraq. Seems doctors told him that to save his finger, his wedding ring would have to be cut off. He said that the ring was a symbol of his love for his wife, cut off his finger.

My opinion to follow. I am not bashing anyone elses.
I saw this story too. It's a wonderful gesture, if you didn't have to sacrifice a body part for it.
The ring is only a symbol of the love. It's a hell of a lot easier to fix the ring than to sew on a finger.
So the doc's cut off the finger and in the confusion also lost the ring.
Now his ring finger and his ring are lost somewhere in Iraq. I hope it was worth it.
Just my $.01

I guess you have to be a romantic to appreciate it. His wife says she is honored to be married to him.

Hmmm.
I am a romantic but I don't know if I think this was the best gesture either.I mean, the wedding ring could have been cut off but preserved to be repaired and marriage vows taken again or something. Also,if I remember correctly, the Greeks believed that the left ring finger had the lifeline from the heart to the hand and that is why a wedding ring traditionally is placed on that finger.
Now this Marine has no finger with which to show his committment to his wife(in this manner),there's just an empty space.
Oh well.I hope he is ok otherwise.

Wow.. My first thought is... TRUE MEN DO EXIST!!!! This is not to criticize anyone, just my first thought. If I were his wife, I would first be shocked, but honored. He thought more of his marital commitment then he did a part of his own body, and that says a lot.

Danielle - I'm with you. I know a ring is only a ring, but it is still symbolic. My WH boinked OW still wearing his wedding ring.

I'm sorry, I do not find that romantic at all, it was criminal of the doctor to proceed and cut off the finger! The Marine was probably in shock and made a decision he will likely regret.
The ring was a material symbol, the finger was part of his physical body that cannot be replaced.
Sickening in my book...

I know it all sounds so romantic. But I have to wonder how long before this marine regrets the decision. Or before him and the doctor are brought up on military charges.
If they both knowningly agreed to cut off a finger that could have been saved, its going to cause the soldier alot more problems then he thinks.
Zero follow up medical care after he gets out, he can be brought up on charges for damaging/destroying government property.
As a health care professional I wont even go into my opinion of the doctor for following the request. That was just flat out wrong. He has disfigured this man for life over a ring that could have been fixed/replaced.
I wonder if he ever heard the words " FIRST DO NO HARM"
