Lately I've been listening to a lot of traditional country music on satelite radio (I'm trying to learn steel guitar). I'm sure everyone knows that this genre is rife with songs about infidelity written from multiple viewpoints; betrayed, wayward, OM, OW, etc.
I thought it might be interesting (only to me, perhaps) to post some lyrics and see if it sparks discussion. Feel free to add your favarite cheatin' song.
Here's one I heard the other day by Ray Price that's classic fogspeak:
THE OTHER WOMAN
Verse 1 Don't accuse me of being without feelings. If you do, you know that you're wrong For it was you who was careless And you drove me to the other woman's arms
Chorus The other woman, isn't prettier than you But the other woman soothes my wounded pride But more important, I feel wanted again I can't give up the other woman in my life
Verse 2 I'm afloat in the middle of a river, and I can't climb out on either side If I go o-ver the deep-end, it's because sweetheart you didn't try
Repeat Chorus

While this isnt a cheating song, it reflects the way Im sure some of us feel, its by "Linkin Park" and for those of you who havent heard them, boy, dont know what your missing, its like just about every song they have ican listen to and relate to, some pretty powerful stuff, should give them a listen, Ill post my favorite ones here..... if you dont mind legato
First one is called Dont Stay... to get the full effect you really need to hear them while reading the lyrics..
"Don't Stay"
Sometimes I need to remember just to breathe Sometimes I need you to stay away from me Sometimes I’m in disbelief I didn’t know Somehow I need you to go
[Chorus:] Don’t stay Forget our memories Forget our possibilities What you were changing me into Just give me myself back and Don’t stay Forget our memories Forget our possibilities Take all your faithlessness with you Just give me myself back and Don’t stay
Sometimes I feel like I trusted you too well Sometimes I just feel like screaming at myself Sometimes I’m in disbelief I didn’t know Somehow I need to be alone
[Chorus]
I don’t need you anymore, I don’t want to be ignored I don’t need one more day of you wasting me away I don’t need you anymore, I don’t want to be ignored I don’t need one more day of you wasting me away
With no apologies
[Chorus]
Don't stay
Don't stay

While country music is rife w/cheating songs from all perspectives. There is one that I absolutely have to change the station. In fact, sadly because I really liked his music, I can't even listen to a song of his without a bad memory.
Alan Jackson "Who's Cheating Who"
When I am w/ WW and this song comes on, I wonder what she thinks? I know what I am thinking of.

Yeah, I had a song like that too. It's not so bad now ... but it still does kind of take me back there if I hear it.

This one makes me cry everytime I hear it.
Tammy Cochran If You Can
Are you awake; are you asleep? Its hard to tell with your back to me Turn around and face me, if you can. Are you afraid what I might see If you should look at me. Now, tell me about her, if you can
If you can look me in the eye and say we're over If you can kiss my lips and feel no fire inside If you can hold me body close and still say you love her most Then you can walk out of my life, if you can.
Everyone makes mistakes; tell me shes the one you made And I'll forgive, and I'll forget, if you can. Who was right and who was wrong Doesnt matter if the love is gone. Honey, I'll keep holding on, if you can.
If you can look me in the eye and say we're over If you can kiss my lips and feel no fire inside If you can hold me body close and still say you love her most Then you can walk out of my life, if you can. You can walk out of my life, if you can. <small>[ December 17, 2004, 06:53 PM: Message edited by: nutcase3 ]</small>

This song was a trigger for me before D-Day. My STBX had a history of running off, mostly before we were married, but even afterwards too, repeatedly with months and months of the Silent treatment(as long as 5 months one time), and her addiction to internet lovers, (4 that I know of). She has broken my heart, visciously so many times. It is scary to think I could let it happen again. Anyway, Maroon 5 - This Love.
I was so high I did not recognize The fire burning in her eyes The chaos that controlled my mind Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane Never to return again But always in my heart
This love has taken it's toll on me She said goodbye too many times before And her heart is breaking in front of me I have no choice cause I won?t say goodbye anymore
I tried my best to feed her appetite Keep her coming every night So hard to keep her satisfied Kept playing love like it was just a game Pretending to feel the same Then turn around and leave again
This love has taken it?s toll on me She said goodbye too many times before And her heart is breaking in front of me I have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore
I'll fix these broken things Repair your broken wings And make sure everything's alright My pressure on her hips Sinking my fingertips Into every inch of you Cause I know that's what you want me to do

ooooh yeh, I'd been thinking of posting a similar thread but...wasn't sure if this was the right place. Maybe the divorce forum is more suitable for my favorites <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
Early into discovery I downloaded a bunch of cheatin', hurtin', survivin' songs onto a CD as a means of well, licking my wounds (or putting salt into them). Anyway they helped me cry my eyes out and get on with my life. Even gave WH a copy of the CD, which confused the heck out of him <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />
The lead in tune is You'll Think of Me by Keith Urban
woke up early this morning around 4am With the moon shining bright as headlights on the interstate I pulled the covers over my head and tried to catch some sleep But thoughts of us kept keeping me awake Ever since you found yourself in someone else's arms I've been tryin' my best to get along But that's OK There's nothing left to say, but
Take your records, take your freedom Take your memories I don't need 'em Take your space and take your reasons But you'll think of me take your cap and leave my sweater 'Cause we have nothing left to weather In fact I'll feel a whole lot better But you'll think of me, you'll think of me
I went out driving trying to clear my head I tried to sweep out all the ruins that my emotions left I guess I'm feeling just a little tired of this And all the baggage that seems to still exist It seems the only blessing I have left to my name Is not knowing what we could have been What we should have been So
Take your records, take your freedom Take your memories I don't need 'em Take your space and take your reasons But you'll think of me take your cap and leave my sweater 'Cause we have nothing left to weather In fact I'll feel a whole lot better But you'll think of me
Someday I'm gonna run across your mind Don't worry, I'll be fine I'm gonna be alright While you're sleeping with your pride Wishing I could hold you tight I'll be over you And on with my life
So take your records, take your freedom Take your memories I don't need'em take your cap and leave my sweater 'Cause we have nothing left to weather In fact I'll feel a whole lot better But you'll think of me
So take your records, take your freedom Take your memories I don't need 'em Take your space and all your reasons But you'll think of me And take your cap and leave my sweater 'Cause we got nothing left to weather In fact I'll feel a whole lot better But you'll think of me, you'll think of me, yeah
And you're gonna think of me Oh someday baby, someday

Thank you George Strait... I've Come To Expect It From You
So upset Nervous wreck I can't believe she said goodbye Sit and smoke Cry and joke About these tears in my eyes
Chorus: How could you do what you gone and done to me I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me But that's what I get I've come to expect it from you
A million times A million lines and I bought 'em every one You don't care You rip and tear every dream I've counted on I guess I should thank my unlucky stars That I'm alive And you're the way you are But that's what I get I've come to expect it from you
Chorus
I could raise hell But what the hell it wouldn't do a bit of good I can leave My heart agrees it seems to think that I should There won't be no more next time doing me wrong You'll come back this time to find that I'm gone
But that's what you get You should expect that from me That's what I get

Song thread says it all, good idea <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love
Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon Show me slowly what I only know the limits of Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the children who are asking to be born Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love

Love this Patty Loveless one too... Blame It On Your Heart (Harlan Howard/Kostas)
You've got a thing or two to learn about me baby 'Cause I ain't taking it no more and I don't mean maybe You don't know right from wrong Well the love we had is gone So blame it on your lying, cheating, cold deadbeating, Two-timing, double dealing Mean mistreating, loving heart
Well all I wanted was to be your one and only And all I ever got from you was being lonely Now that dream is laid to rest 'Cause you have failed the test Hey blame it on your lying, cheating, cold deadbeating, Two-timing, double dealing Mean mistreating, loving heart
Are you headed for a heartache, oh yeah Gonna get a bad break, oh yeah You made a bad mistake, oh yeah Well, you're never gonna find another love like mine Someone's gonna do you like you done me honey And when she does you like she'll do you, it ain't funny You need some sympathy But don't be calling me Hey blame it on your lying, cheating, cold deadbeating Two-timing, double dealing Mean mistreating, loving heart

Both of these songs, the George Strait and the Patty Loveless, have that other quality of finding the humor within the painful situation and that helps also.

When I was knee deep in pain and confusion this song BY NICKLEBACK was on a pretty much on a continuous loop.
SOMEDAY
How the hell'd we wind up like this And why weren't we able to see the signs we missed And try to turn the tables I wish you'd unclench your fists And unpack your suitcase Lately there's been to much of this But don't think it's to late Nothings wrong just as long as you know someday I will Someday, somehow I'm gona make it alright But not right now I know you're wondering when But you're the only one that knows that Someday, somehow I'm gona make it alright Well I'd hope that since we are here anyway That we'd end up saying Things we always needed to say So we could end up staying Now the story's played out like this Just like a paperback novel Let's rewrite an ending that fits Instead of a Hollywood horror Nothings wrong Just as long as you know someday I will Someday, somehow I'm gona make it alright But not right now

Well if you haven't picked up Dierks Bentley's cd, you should.
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">"Wish It Would Break"
That old picture frame keeps hangin' 'round Cause' I ain't ready yet to take it down But every now and then I'll slam the door Shake it loose and she'll hit the floor But I can't throw a good thing away I wish it would break I swear my trucks got a haunted radio Cause' I hear you in every song But I know what the silence makes Me do So I keep givin' those buttons more abuse I wonder how much punchin' it can take I wish it would break [chorus] Then I could move on right on Down the line Where I don't see you need you In my life But you're wrapped around me Your memory's bound me like a chain I wish it would break And this old heart of mine's got a mind of its own And it's decided not to let you go Even though your love's no longer here It won't let me shed one tear Cause' it's still holdin' onto yesterday I wish it would break [chorus] I wish it would break I wish it would break Go on and break</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> </font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">"Forget About You"
I'm gonna build a fire in the middle of July Burn your pictures and go for a drive Down to the river watch the ink from your love letters fade Come back home and turn that old mattress over Pour out the whiskey try wakin' up sober Gonna change it all tonight, gonna do whatever it takes
Yeah, cause I've lost weight and I've lost hairs And I don't intend to ever go back there Drinkin and a-thinkin' 'bout a love that just wasn't true There's a good chance I'll end up insane Without enough sense to come in from the rain My mind might be the last thing you make me loose But I'll forget about you
I heard that old Jones song just the other day 'bout a man who took a broken heart to his grave But I'll be damned if a memory's gonna lay me down I might be walkin' around with a head full of air Actin' kinda crazy but I don't care A heart barely beatin' but I'll still be above the ground

It's strange to hear your voice I did not expect for you to call You wonder how I'm doin How I'm holdin up Since you did me wrong
[chorus] Well how am I doin' since you did what you done to me? I can't lie I sometimes cry when I think of how it used to be I keep my friends with me, I stay busy and I don't get much sleep Baby, that's how I'm doin since you did what you done to me
Well now wait one minute, I Failed to mention Those tears I cried, are tears of joy Cause' it was no fun there Under your thumb and Now that we're done I'm Gettin' right every night With every single ever-lovin' girl in sight, so
[chorus]
Well when all my friends heard what a You know what you were they Took me out on the town But then I heard our song and I dance along but It felt all wrong cause' She was sweet, she let me lead She never took her ever-lovin' eyes off me so

Well I don't know what you were thinkin' Runnin' round on me Now you say you're sorry Well honey I agree...so
How are you doin' since you did What you done to me Girl don't lie you know you cry Cause' you know how good it used to be Yeah, tell me does the thought of Losin' my true love make it hard to sleep, baby How are you doin' since you did What you done to me

Ain't it just like one of us to pick up the phone and call after a couple of drinks And say "How've you been" and wonderin' that maybe you've been thinkin' 'bout me And somewhere in the conversation an old familiar invitation always arrives And I may hate myself in the morning, but I'm gonna love you tonight.
Everyone's known someone that they just can't help but want And even though they just can't make it work out, well the ones who lingers on. So once again we wind up in each other's arms, pretending that it's right And I may hate myself in the morning, but I'm gonna love you tonight.
I know it's wrong, But it ain't easy moving on. So why can't two friends remember the good times once again?
(Fiddle & steel solo)
Tomorrow when I wake up, I'll be feeling a little guilty, a little sad. Thinkin' how it used to be before everything went bad. I guess that's what it is and late night calls like this that we try to find And I may hate myself in the morning, but I'm gonna love you tonight. I heard this one yesterday; written by the great songwriting team of Felice and Boudeleaux Bryant and recorded by Carl Smith.
THIS ORCHID MEANS GOODBYE
Tonight I send an orchid And though I'll always care This orchid means goodbye to you and to our love affair It's just my way to tell you And I hope that you won't cry But I be-long to someone else this orchid means goodbye
When you said that you loved me I knew it wouldn't do Cause I'm in love with someone else I guess I love you too But I'm married to another What chance have you and I So I just send an orchid, dear This orchid, means goodbye
Our love might have been different But I made sacred vows And I can't ever break the heart that I hold with mine now So please forget the past, dear as time goes passing by Cause we can't ever love again This orchid means goodbye
I don't know if it comes through in the lyrics or if you have to hear the recording, but what I was struck by in listening to it was the false nobility. It's like he's saying, 'we had our fun but now I've got to do the right thing and end it.' Why all of sudden is he having an attack of morals triggered by 'when you said that you loved me'? Hmm.

"I notice the ring" by Chris Isaak:
Long legged, Good looking, You got everything. Slow walking, You come up, Then I notice the ring, I notice the ring.
You're talking, I'm listening... But I don't hear a thing. Is it something he bought you or only a ring?
You don't gotta fool me if you say it's only jewelry I believe you when you slip off the ring. It gets complicated if it's more than just gold plated. Are you single, does it mean anything?
She's laughing, "Stop worrying, Get in the swing." Heart pounding, I'm wondering, "Just what did she mean?"
Say nobody's waiting, That's it's nothing, just gold plating That it really doesn't mean anything. Say your grandma left it to you Just all you need to do is tell me that it's no wedding ring.
Nice diamond

The worst one for me right now is that Nelly/Tim McGraw song that is getting so much airplay...it brings up very painful and vivid images...
Cause it's all in my head I think about it over and over again And I can't keep picturin you with him And it hurts so bad... yeah Cause it's all in my head I think about it over and over again I replay it over and over again And I can't take it, I can't shake it no
[Nelly] I can't wait to see you Wanna see if you still got that look in your eye That one you had for me Before, we, said our goodbyes And it's a shame that we Gotta spend our time bein mad about the same things (Over and over again) about the same thing (Over and over again) Ho.. but I think, she's leavin Aw, man, she's leavin And, I don't know what else to do
[Tim M] Can't go on not lovin you
[Chorus]
[Nelly] I remember the day you left
I remember the last breath you took right in front of me When you said that you would leave I was too damn stubborn to try to stop you or say anything But I see clearly now And this choice I made keeps playin in my head (Over and over again) play in my head (Over and over again) Ho.. but I think, she's leavin Aw, man, she's leavin And, I don't know what else to do
[Tim M] Can't go on not lovin you
[Chorus]
[Nelly] Now, that I've real-izzzed That I'mmmm goin dow-hown From all this pain you've put me through
[Tim M] Everytime I close my eyes (woo!) I-hiiii like {?} ohh-hohhh I can't go on not lovin you
[Chorus] - repeat 2X
[Nelly] Uh, uh-uh-uh Uh, uh-uh-uh Uh, uh-uh-uh Uh, uh-uh-uh Uh, uh-uh-uh Uh... over and over again, over and over again
Cause it's all in my head

I had forgotten this one and even though we're not sure what the relationship is, I prefer to think that they're married.
This seems like the perfect Plan A song. He's telling her in a gentle way, almost a seductive way, to end the affair. I particularly like the clever way that he refers to 'her friend'; not blatantly hostile, more like dismissive; like he knows who the better man is.
A moment of silence please, for the great Jim Reeves:
Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone Let's pretend that we're together all alone I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low And you can tell your friend there with you He'll have to go
Whisper to me tell me do you love me true Or is he holding you the way I do Though love is blind make up your mind I've got to know Should I hang up or will you tell him He'll have to go
You can't say the words I want to hear While you're with another man Do you want me answer yes or no Darlin' I will understand
Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone Let's pretend that we're together all alone I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low And you can tell your friend there with you He'll have to go Yes, you can tell your friend there with you He'll have to go
