Pep, Stroking never hurts, but I guess I wanted to know because I was wondering what someone can really see in a forum post that would enable them to make such a statement.
P.S. I missed you. I wish you really COULD adopt me. I sure have been missing a mother my whole life. [ February 16, 2005, 11:38 AM: Message edited by: frozen1229 ]

I'm fairly accurate when I trust my intuitive mind ... but not when I am emotionally involved myself.
BUT ... I think I am more relaxed than I have ever been before in my life, and this enables me to connect with some things in other people that I could not "see" when I was less relaxed.
I could adopt you, I am 20 years older than you ... and that higher milage does give me some experiences that make me appear to know more than I actually know .... I just have been to many places in my life , and made many mistakes, where I was paying attention .... much like yourself.
Whenever you feel down, say to yourself "this too shall pass" ... because it all passes, the GOOD and the BAD .... one day we all shall be dust .... so breathe in and out and take pleasure in your life at every opportunity.

I am going to cover several posts in this one. I will get to the above quote, last.
First, I want to second what PEP says about what she likes about you. In particular, I love it that you are a survivor. I have been "rode hard and put up wet' as well. That is also why I speak to you so strongly. You have the strength to handle it. What is good about that, is it means that it likely won't take as long for you to deal with your marital issues as some or even most.
Secondly. This is to both frozen and patriot. Frozen, considering the difficulty of your situation, consider giving patriot the 'benefit of the doubt' on his rough handling of you. But only once, this time and this time only. Patriot. if you mishandle your wife again, I am encouraging her to immediately get the police involved and press charges HARD. You know what that means to you from a civilian perspective and militarily. Don't rough her up again.
Patriot. I want to encourage you to start posting here. Start your own thread. We want to help you through this. I want to help you if you will let me.
Thirdly. Frozen, slow down with Patriot. You are not going to fix this overnight. It is going to take time. Patriot. YOU CALL your wife from work. Let her know that you love her. Tell her where you are and how long you think you will be. My wife and I still do this, and have for 29 years. It is a basic marital kindness.
Fourthly. Expect that you will both play the push-me/pull-you game while you work at achieving a new balance in your relationship. This marital 'tug-of-war' is normal in a normal non-affair traumatized relationship. It is greatly exacerbated in a traumatized relationship. This is also normal, and as long as BOTH partners are trying for recovery, it WILL GET BETTER.
To answer your questions from above.
The first thing to learn in reigning in your emotions, is that if you DON'T act on a particular feeling, the world as you know it will NOT be affected adversely :-)
Practically, for starters, whenever you 'feel' that what you are about to say or do is in direct and immediate expression of how you feel RIGHT NOW, pause, wait a few seconds. Play through your head what you would have said. Ask yourself; "Do I really need to say this? Is this going to help or hurt my situation? Is this going to escalate or calm matters?"
Apply the same rules for emotional speech, to emotional reactions.
Once you have mastered that, I can tell you how to set clear emotional boundaries.
On to Patriot's character issue. There are several things that must happen to change that. Those changes will take time. He must first realize the full extent of the damage done. That will take time. He must eventually find what he has done distasteful. He must 'turn away' from the part of himself that was weak enough to allow the behavior. There is more to it, but this is a good starting place.

And that, dear lady, appears 'good enough'. No wonder Patriot fell in love with you.
In the movie, "As Good as it Gets", Nicholson asks "What if this is as good as it gets?".
For my life, love, family, and accomplishments, if I were asked that question, I would have to say that it is 'good enough'.
Once the affair issue is resolved in your situation, how do you think you will answer the question then?
All the best, Gimble

Frozen,
OK..but you aren't going to like it.
No, I wouldn't..not with him.
Why?
It occurred PRIOR to the marriage..for..a year was it? So..how long did you date before you married? How much of your relationship did not include the A?
Now..granted..I'm a harsh judge of character. Probably not one to be plan Aing even though I know it is a good plan. I'm pridefull and vain. I'm detached enough from my feelings to pull off a plan A..just don't think I'd want to.
My H and I had been married for years before he began his descent..I watched it happen.
He had a ONS and confessed the next day.
Even still he looked about as appealing to me as a maggot infested trash can lid.
It was he and not I that wanted to salvage.
With much reluctance I agreed for the benefit of the children and because I did really love and care for him..his pain pained me as well..I didn't like to see him suffer. I had enough history to make a reasonable estimation that there WAS something to salvage. That it was RECOVERY that he/we needed..
An A of this sort that happens before you are even married..is usually a big red flag..despite Patriots best intentions..and it will probably take YEARS of IC to sort himself out.
There is no marriage to recover.
Then..I have seen some patterns that concern me..some controlling behaviors..and pushing for the marriage during a time of extreme shock is about as ethical as having the victims of the wreck you just caused sign release forms before the ambulance gets there.
I know that you are angry with yourself for allowing the marriage to go underway..and, yes ultimately every decision that you make belongs only to you..but I do understand the DEPTH of the shock and confusion..I have been there after all.
So, do I think it could work out..sure. I wouldn't put money on it though. You said you CAN'T go through this again. There are no guarantees in life..but in this situation I would have to say that the risks are likely elevated compared to what they might be with another person. It is an internal problem..it needs an internal solution..you are not him..and will not know when/if change has occurred..or if this is more illusion.
It's a bigger risk that I personally would be willing to make..with the disclaimer that as I have said..I am a harsh judge of character and am extremely selective about who I allow in my life.
I also am not you. You will have to make your own choices and accept the consequences..there will be one whatever you choose.
