Gray,

I think you would be the exception though. You are a very grounded centered person. Most who frequent bars are not, and so that beomes their life.

I think Jlseagull summed it up pretty well from what I remember when I tended bar.

I couldn't help but wonder what the regulars were avoiding and not taking care of at home.

And no one is immune from the allure of becomming involved with someone at the bar if they frequent them without their spouse.

Someone once said on here that alcohol, bars and lonliness were a deadly combination.

I find the bars depressing as hell. Even though the money is usually pretty decent, I don't think I could ever work in them again. I used to be able to tell an alcoholic as soon as he took the first sip of his first drink. Now I think would be able to tell an infidel, or potential infidel from the moment they opened their mouth.

"Do you think it is "prudish" or "uptight" to feel this way?"

You bet I do!

Sounds like my kind of people! Want 2 go 2 a star party and gee whiz some faint fuzzies with a bunch of other prudish geeks?

That'd be FUN!

You're a geek 2long?

And all this time I thought you were a freak.

Whew, what a relief. I dig geeks.

I'm a geek too you know, but I am a cool geek and only emanate coolness. I don't do the intelligent geekiness too well. Just ask my two geeky smart brothers

As for you star party, count me in. I wished on a star once you know. And every once in awhile I still go out and do a moon dance around my fire when the mood hits me. Often does wonders right before planting season. Oh no that's not geeky, that's witchy. Sorry, wrong persona.

2long, when Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp were here, sparrow and I would go out to the MI observatory late at night. The geeks were everywhere with their Dobson mounts and their parkas. We loved them. They were skyin' to see so many people out there. Tons o' fun.

Ah, Hyakutake! Now THAT was an amazingly beautiful comet! BIG, 2! (at least in the sky).

Somewhere on the web there are a 2ple pic2res of it that I 2k in March of 1997.

Hale Bopp was bright, and truly big, but got nowhere near as close as Hyakutake. I got a pic of it somewhere, 2, but we had just moved 2 our house and I didn't have much time 2 go 2 a dark sky site 2 do it justice.

We're due for another bright one.

I, my brother, my WW, even her OM are confirmed non-drinkers. My parents didn't drink at all, and never went to places where drink was served. My Dad's background with this - is that he was in the Navy during WWII - and they put him on Shore Patrol in San Diego - which meant that his job was rounding up drunk and disorderly sailors. He had a near hatred of drinking for the rest of his life.

One of my W's brother's is an alchoholic. W doesn't drink and would have nothing to do with any man who does (except her brothers, of course). She has too many bad memories of her brother being out of control when she was growing up. (He's 10 years older than she).

Thanks AD,

It's nice to know I'm not the only one out there.

I have never before come across anyone who,at least, didn't drink "socially".Whatever that means.

Bars - Bad

The truth is I never thought I would want to pick up a girl I met at one. At least not a keeper. Then again why pick them up if you don't see a chance at making it perminate. I guess I'm just the marrying kind.

I feel the same you do RHM about meeting people in the bar.

Also what Daisy said about finding happy, functional people in happy functional places. That is just so true Daisy. Although I do feel that happy functional people do occasionally visit the bars to see a band or have a glass of wine and dinner like Low and the others.

O'girl, I have been trying to think of people I know that do not drink at all and I can only think of a few. Of these most are recovered alcoholics who I know at church. In fact in my church there are quite a few recovered alcoholics/addicts because the pastor is very, very good with people trying to overcome addictions.

And these people do seem very happy and productive to me. Fun & funny too!

You must be in California.

weaver,

My mom is the closest former alcoholic I know. She has been sober well over 12 years now and the whole ordeal, while truly terrible, was a life changing experience for us.She is the most wonderful, faithful and loving parent I could have hoped for now and that I lost during my formative teenage years.

She no longer is part of AA but I don't think you always need to have that label placed on yourself.AA had a way of keeping you plugged into the dysfunction of alcoholism, not truly allowing you to leave the nest,so to speak. For some,it is important to always be connected to AA but my mom needed to separate from them in order to grow on her own and she as become a great person! She is so very happy now and very spiritual.

AD,

I have heard other's talk about social drinking and I am not clear on what exactly that means: one drink a day,one drink while out with friends, drinking only with friends socially, etc? It doesn't really matter to me now but it will when I enter a new relationship.I know that people can alter the truth a bit here and there and although I would love to find someone who didn't drink at all, having a glass of wine with dinner isn't something I couldn't live with. But,I will not tolerate anyone who has several beers a week and cannot control their urges.

As I casually stroll along my beautiful 7 acres and see all the beer bottles/cans and Jack Daniels bottles thrown along the side of the road and that are on my property the more I do not want anything to do with alcohol and those that drink.JMHO.
