based on a true story
---------------------
there are real women
their existence can be scientifically proven
height, weight, physical characteristics
verifiable, measurable
Social Security numbers
flaws, assets, disqualifying traits
character witnesses could testify in court
they speak, breathe, live, move
eat, sleep, stumble, cough, and blink
create footprints and air turbulence
and then there’s the hypothetical woman
she is a natural impossibility
a vortex in time
black hole in my mind
optical illusion within a mirage
a haunting image, an elusive memory
she defies all natural laws
I have seen her from a distance, if only in a dream
I recognized her face, but then it flew from me
her beautiful figure I cannot recall
only Escher could have drawn such an angel
is she in the future or the past?
I question everything I deigned to know
am I a victim of my own naivete?
can such perfection exist in this fallen world?
pure beauty overcome by raw evil
perhaps my insanity manufactured them both
but I must persist in documenting her sheer perfection
everything a man could desire, and so much more
like breathing in a bliss-saturated cloud
once upon a time she smiled at me
a smile just for me
she smiled
at me
in love
for me
my heart was aloft
alas, I cannot assure you that it wasn’t just my imagination
can she ever take human form again?
will I find the hypothetical woman wrapped in flesh again?
the physics demand that such a thing is impossible
but sometimes, stubbornly
I cling to my beautiful deception
that once I had her in my arms
perhaps she is around the corner
just out of range of natural vision
though she may not exist, she haunts me
