You should check with an attorney.
In my state, the answer is usually no. It's rotten, I know, but here's how they look at it: the person who stays has the full and exclusive use of the home. Therefore, he should bear the financial burden on his own.
They even do this when the person who leaves is on a a lease or mortgage.
Again, call an attorney.

I can only comment on California. Your WW, if she also signed the lease, is equally liable for the ENTIRE rent, not half. If she files for divorce and/or legal separation this item may be assigned to you by a judgement of family court but your credit could be affected by that time. Regardless of what the court orders, if she signed a lease and the rent is not paid it will affect the credit history of both of you.
I am not an attorney but have been visiting this very item in my D negotiations. Get some legal advice ASAP

In my state your wife would be responsible to make sure the rent is paid if her name is on the lease. If your wife is not on the lease, you are stuck. Perhaps in that case you could talk to your landlord about breaking the lease early and getting a place you can afford on your own for now.
