I am new to this site, but it seems like there's some really great ideas out there. I'm hoping someone will have some for me! Also I tend to run on a bit, so please excuse this if it's long!
A little background information first. I am 34 and my husband is 33. We've been married for 4 years, together for 7. We have 2 kids: 6 and 3. My husband is from Israel and we met when he was here in the states for a year training for his job. He had a hard time when we met because his parents are very religious jews, and I am a christian. It was very difficult for him to talk to his family about me. Eventualy, he got over that, I got pregnant, and later we got married. Then I went with him in Israel for two years. We decided to come back to the states and returned 2 weeks after 9-11.
We are both only children, so I think he has an enormous amount of guilt about leaving his parents, although he would never admit it. (And they make sure that he feels the guilt!)
This is my second marriage. I was married to my high school sweetheart when I was 21 and he was 17. We separated after a year when he "came out" and then divorced 2 years later. His family had a really hard time dealing with this, so over the years I stayed close with them.
My husband had no problem with that until lately. My ex's mom was the matron of honor at our wedding and is the godmother of our daughter. But my ex's sister owes me some money and ever since then my husband wants nothing to do with any of the family. He feels like family shouldn't do things like that to each other. And he says I'm with him now, so I should be with his family. (As if I can, since they are all still in Israel.) He refuses to listen to my side of things or even to try to understand.
So last weekend my ex's brother got married. Of course I really wanted to go but my husband didn't want me to. We fought about it all last week, until I finally gave in when I said nothing was worth that kind of headache. Saturday, the day of the wedding, my husband said that I should go because he didn't want me to be upset. I said no, and it was back and forth until I told him that ok, I would go. He has a habit of "punishing" me but shutting me out with silence and putting up a wall, so I made him promise not to do that if I went, which he did promise.
So Saturday when I got back from the wedding I called him at work (he works nights) and he was acting very odd on the phone. And since then he has completely avoided me, just talking to the kids, although not really talking to them either. He's on the computer all day on his days off. When he's working he goes into work early, comes home and goes straight to bed. This behavior is completely out of character for him. I've tried to talk to him and he tells me there's nothing wrong, he has no problems. And when I press he gets irritated and says what do you want?
To be honest I don't know what to do! How are we supposed to get over a problem if we can't even discuss it?
Does anybody out there have some advice for me??? I could use all the help I could get at this point!!!
