See, that's what I thought. This isn't going to work for someone like me is it? That's why I left in the first place. You've just reinforced my original thinking about AA.

I'll sound like such an idiot. Do AA people really put up with idiots such as me? it must be so demeaning. Jerry

Everyone feels like an idiot at first; everyone feels uncomfortable in a new environment. You are no different than anyone else. You don't have to tell your story. But if you can say "I pass," then surely you can say "I am here to listen." See, saying "I pass" sounds like a cop out, but saying the latter sounds like you are sincerely there to listen. I thought you said earlier that you would be able to say this? Did I misunderstand?

Jerry,
Some of the best people I know are recovering alcoholics. AA has the highest success rate for a reason. It works!
If you can get past this hurdle you have going on in your head, you will probably love AA. One of the things you will be forced to do if you are going to beat this thing is to drop your pre-conceived ideas and your pride, and your judgements.
We are all in this life together, we all have our own demons and if we can find a place to help us through our nightmare with people who care...how wonderful.
I don't know any "true" alcoholics who were able to beat it on their own. I know some habitual drinkers who were able to but it sounds like you are in the first category.
My dad died of alcoholism. One of the best, most talented and caring men I have ever known. He didn't admit he needed help until it was too late.
Wishing you the very best, weaver

Morning ML, You're right, of course,. I just have to do it and sort everything out in my head later. If I start to think, I'll lose any resolve that's left. Hmmmmm, I thought I wasn't in denial. What a classic dope. Ok, I have some vacation coming and was thinking maybe I should take it this week while trying to get sober. What do you think?

That sounds like a good plan, ST. I do think it would be easier on you if you called the AA # beforehand and got a temporary sponsor who could meet you at a closed meeting. That might be easier than walking into meeting alone.
But......you just have to get through the FIRST TIME and the next time it will be easier. I promise you, you will grow to LOVE these meetings and look forward to them if you just give it a chance.

Hi Weaver, Thanks for your thoughts. My dad, too, was an alcoholic who never admited it. One thanksgiving he passed out head first into a plate of mashed potatoes. Quite a site, believe me. But being the good Irish Catholic enabler, I cleaned him up, drove him home, and put him to bed. I just don't want anyone to have that kind of memory of me . God Bless, Jerry

Mr. Pep did this too ....'cept it wasn't Thanksgiving, it was Christmas. It was the Christmas we were "exchanging" holidays with our Jewish neighbors. We went to their holiday meal ... and then they came to ours. Thank God for AA and my husband's 9 years of sobriety ! He really has become a different man ... and I had forgotten about this incident until I read what you wrote about your Dad. One day at a time ... it works if you work it !
