he's about 4 and i rode him today for the first time...wow he is powerful! hubby wants me to buy him....he hasnt seen me that happy in years. but im a little afraid...ive worked there helping out but never owned my own...want to know exactly what im in for. i would be boarding him for awhile until i can get the new house and property going. but he is only 5 minutes away. why am i so afraid to make this commitment.....tell me what im in for....lol.(he is so handsome....and he is also very responsive with just slight reigning...no feet or knee pressure. but man he wants to just go....lol. i could feel it...just wanted to let loose and run.....)

i cant believe im considering this.....lol

Hey nikko,

I just got back from errands/shopping. Soooo, how exciting!!!! I LOVE getting new pets. What kind, quarterhorse? I am not a qhorse owner, but I have considered getting one. What are you planning to do with him?

Think VERY hard on that one. Cause I don't part with my animals easily, but they don't always fit in a future plan. i.e. Never planned on jumping (not really, was a DREAM and first time was SSOO great, I laughed and said that it was as much fun as I had dreamed since I was 6 probably). Luckily, my horse is great jumper. Probably won't handle just trailriding too well, but we are hoping to take him over to Queeny Park this summer and try. He was jsut there for mini-event. He is NOT a great dressage horse. It seems like they are alot like people in many respects, they each seem to like/fit certain disciplines...and not just qhorse = trails or warmblood = dressage.

I have learned SOOO much having them at my house, as opposed to boarding, which I always did in the past!! It is SOO HARD and yet, I wouldn't trade it for anything (except kidstuff). MAKE SURE that you AND HUBBY research all of this. My H is NOT a horse person, and tho he likes 'em and has one, he does not feel the same I as do. This is a tuff part in our relationship. It is very important to me and my kids tho. And I do the brunt of the work, I can safely say that!

And how much do you know about founder, colic. worming, vaccinations, shoeing/trimming...the list is ENDLESS. Hurt horses happen all the time. Us horsey peops say/know that these powerful animals with skinny legs will find the littlest things to hurt themselves on in a 1000 acre pasture!

Please tell me more. And ask me more. I love to talk about this stuff. Can you tell? <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

jls

P.S. ALOT of horseowners will let you "try" a horse out or buy one on trial basis. This is frequently done. I was leery about this at first (thought it was taking advantage), but is quite the norm, with proper paperwork and such it is a really smart idea.

he is a quarter. basically is gonna be just a trail riding kind of sitch. i dont do dressage...i do western.lol he is so sweet natured and friendly---just wants to be loved.

when we went today he saddles beautifully. the only thing that seemed to bother him is when we were putting his bridle on...didnt like the strap going over his right ear...got in a bit of a snit for about 5 minutes and sulked in his stall.lol(have to check his ear tomorrow---didnt want to push my luck!) we walked him to the ring and hubby held him while i mounted. he was a bit nervous at first....wasnt quite sure what i wanted from him. in the last few weeks others have looked at him and really pushed him to see what he can do.....me i just wanted a calm walk. so it took him a bit to settle in. once he did we were ok. turns with just the slightest of pressure on the reigns.

while i was on him i could initially feel the tenseness in him....for a fleeting minute i thought---OH, HERE WE GO!!!! i almost expected to be dumped...lol...but he did fine. he has that youngsters energy....the farm owner wants me to work and walk him everyday to settle him in. hubby wants me to buy him...

now as far as what i need to know----tell me all of it...lol

if i do buy him i will board him there so he is already use to it and their feed and schedule. as far as everything else...im all ears...i will be learning from both you and my friend.

i still cant believe im considering this....lol

ok--im bumping this, so as not to bore idiotville to death with my horse talk...lol!

gonna get some leads to leave in my car....brushes and other stuff too!

oh--i wanted to tell you, the farmer also offered to keep him there for 125.00 a month including everything. hay, feed, barn and iver 150 acres to roam in...lol. think i got a deal????lol
i also know he wants me there to help out. he keeps telling me i have some unwritten language with the horses....i call it love and respect but ok....lol. hes got a few that need some work and he knows with me being there i will do it just because. lol so he is giving me a deal..i know board with full care around here is usually 300-350.00 a month.

ok---first question of the day---what do i need to look for from the vet in a checkup? i know to ask if his knees have come together....dont know what to technically call it but he is young and we dont know his exact age---guessing about 4...maybe. coggins is checked by bloodwork right? what else?? he did have a slight cough when he came in...couple of doses of medicine and he seems fine now. i am clueless as to what to look for or ask the vet to do...lol any help is greatly appreciated...thank you.
i think this is the final healing thing for me....i think this is what i need to finally do. it will slowly get me my confidence back....
