Happy Father's Day, dad.
You're life was such a mixture of strength, honor, generosity, success and failure.
Something happened in the two years you spent in Viet Nam which broke you. It made the genes which would succept you to alcoholism too hard for you to fight.
A doctor who you played college football with sent me a football recently as an award for your achievements playing college ball. He said at that time you were the best in the country. He has called a few times and told me stories of you that I never knew. You were very much a hero as a teen and a young man, and then a different kind of hero in the war.
But to me, although the last five years of your life were nothing more than that of a man dying from the disease of alcholism, you never raised your voice, never showed an unkindness and never waivored in who you were as a person, husband, father and friend.
In the times shortly following detox when you were lucid, you would stop by my house almost daily to bring me a cool screwdriver you picked up, or a baby outfit for Paige or just to have dinner with me if I did not go to your and mom's house. I really miss those times and will forever cherish them, because in those days you became my best friend, as well as my loving dad.
You taught me understanding, patience and compassion for those who are down. For those who have demons which they simply can not conquer.
I love you dad, and I miss you.
I am hurting dad, and I wish you were here.

Wow, someone was reading this on who's online and it's amazing because it's 6 years (I thought it was 5 years but my mum told me today it was 6 years) exactly to the day that my father died.
For my dad, I still miss you. You were a wonderful, caring, lovely man and the best father anyone could ever have and everyone, EVERYONE, loved you.
