I have what the doctor calls "chronic tonsilitis." I saw an ears, nose and throat specialist and he suggests that I have my tonsils removed. I hear that it's absolutely painful though. Do you have any experience in this - is it really that bad???
I have been sick every month with this, since January. It's really cutting into my life too so it looks as if this is the last resort. I just don't know about the whole pain thing. I'm a weenie when it comes to pain.

Well, I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was five, and all I remember was a really sore throat. But, lots of ice cream helped!

I'm a weenie when it comes to pain. I assume that you have had at least 3 or 4 streptococcal/bacterial infections in the past year for this to be an issue. If you have chronic tonsillits and have enlarged tonsils and adenoids this can also cause sleeping issues including snoring and apnea. Am ethical and qualified surgeon does not offer surgery as an option UNLESS really necessary. Especially an elective procedure like this. My advice would be to get a second INDEPENDENT opinion, and then if the first opinion is confirmed, schedule the surgery. You can palliate the pain with plenty of narcotics and ice cream and have your spouse "baby" you during the recovery. It sounds like the chronically infected tonsils are really having an impact on your life. Take care. LM
Some people just don't get it, they don't get it that they don't get it.
I had the right to remain silent.......but I didn't have the ability.

It sounds like the chronically infected tonsils are really having an impact on your life. I have had goodness knows how many strep tests, all coming back negative. My regular doctor told me that my tonsils have shrunk but they are still there, so I don't know if that's considered "enlarged" or not. I know that after time tonsils can shrink - even disappear. Anyway, she was the first to suggest having them pulled, the ears, nose and throat doctor was my second opinion. The specialist gave me Augmentin and I am to take that for 21 days to see if that helps. If not, then I guess it's time to get them yanked. Okay HopefulNY, don't sugar coat it. I would rather plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Yep...its harder on adults then kids. Pain meds are helpful as well as ice cream, ice pops and jello. I work with a woman who just had hers taken out she missed 3 weeks of work because the majority of her day is spent talking on the phone with insurance companies.(maybe that was just an excuse to get out of talking to insurance co)
Just remember not to yell at the computer screen when you are posting! I hope all goes well!

Had mine removed @ around the age of 21 (just a couple of years back, in 1969), right after graduating from nursing school. Lots of vomiting from all the blood I "ingested" during surgery, and a very unhappy throat for a week or so...but that could've been because instead of eating soft stuff like they said, I went home and immediately succumbed to the siren scent of the tacos everybody else was having for dinner. This was made even more attractive by the fact that my parents said I'd never be able to get it down. Naturally, a challenge of that nature could not be ignored, and I did, indeed, eat the whole thing. I SAID I was 21! Can I help it if my tonsils were removed before my wisdom teeth came in?
What it looks like to me, based on Lemonman's post and yours, is that you need to find out why they want to take them out if (a) your strep cultures all came back negative, and (b) if they've "shrunk" spontaneously already. What kind of trouble are they actually causing you, and how often does this happen? Balance that against the temporary pain of removal and you can come to a better assessment of whether or not you want to have the procedure done. Once I got over the surgery, the vomiting, and the taco, I've never missed them; and I certainly have the least number of sore throats of anybody in the family!
Good luck choosing between Door A or Door B.
