An absolutely wonderful song from a genius. Says more about London than any tourist brochure.

Sleep well, Friend.

Things are much calmer today. The buses are running and people have made their way to work determined not to let this 'thing' beat them. If the death toll remains at 37, it is a miracle that more lives were not lost. Apparently, because the trains were so packed the people around the explosion acted as cushions to the rest in the carriages, ie. the death toll could have been far higher had the trains been less busy because the explosion would not have been so contained. I'm a little bit claustrophobic and can't imagine the fear down in the tunnels yesterday. Pitch black, smoky. The stuff nightmares are made of. I do hope this is an isolated incident and people soon feel free to get back on with their lives. TT

TT,

Did you see that footage taken by a survivor on a videophone as they escaped from a tunnel?

That, and the blown up bus, are the images that will always haunt me.

Alph.

Anyname,

I agree with much of what you say, and have often wondered the same questions you pose.

Bob, and our other British MBers...I am impressed, however not surprised by the heart and soul you express as you deal with such tragedy. You are an inspiration to those of us who can only sit from afar and watch this unfold.

Maybe Bob at some point in the future you would be willing to share your thoughts about the war in Iraq... I have talked with people from other countries, and find that they are very puzzled why the US invaded Iraq.

London is today a fully functional city. vchruches have stayed open 24 hours as places to pray and rest and use facilities and serve tea.

Our wonderful services agencies have cleared the strets and tubes and gotten transport running again.

Anyone who was able returned to workk today.

Our financial markets have recovered.

My friend reported seeing a hand written note in the rear window of a bus running ON TIME through Holborn that read

Quote
2/10 Gotta do better than that Osama

the cowardly murdering [censored] haven't done ANYTHING to Londoners but piss them off a bit.

We better than them. Full Stop.

re Iraq, Its been a long-term debate in the UK. Most of us think we were lied to about the reasons for the invasion, but now we're there we better restore democracy and social services to those folks.

Iraq attitude seems to be the same most places I think.

whatever we do dont doubt it will cost 1000's of soldiers lives we need to face that truth;

and dont think Afghanistan is over either.

Despite our own joy here right now we still haven't heard from my neice who is living in London and we know she travels the tube to work.
No panic or anything but it is worrying because you just dont know.
The Aust High Commission is attempting to contact her so her mum just waits - we know no Aust has died yet but a few are injured.
Must be terrible for the families of the dead & injured over there even if most are standing up to the [censored].

Aussie2,

I can't imagine how it must feel to be waiting to hear from a loved one...prayerful thoughts are with you.

Regarding the reason for the invasion - my hope is that a committee will be appointed one day to study this; similar to the very excellent committee appointed to study 9/11.

We've learned so much from the findings. I'm hopeful we'll find out the real reasons behind the motivation.

As you said Bob, we now have a moral obligation to make things right for the people in Iraq - my hope is that the price isn't as high as I fear.
