One of my friends ... one of the two that has been keeping me accountable ... recently asked me about some of the MB books that I had been reading and whether they were written from a Christian perspective or not. After spending an hour talking to Jennifer Chalmers, the author of Surviving an Affair, in counseling, I know they were. And I see so many people on the MB that offer their advice from a Christian perspective as well. But is there anything out there that actually states this so I can actually show my friend?

I know that most Christian bookstores also carry the MB books, and they are usually picky about what they carry. I got mine from a Christian book store.

I think that the MB founders very wisely avoid emphasizing the religious roots of their philosophy w/r/t marriage and infidelity. By doing this, they tell us all that you don't have to be a Christian for the things they say to be true. These are human truths. Personally, I don't believe you need to be a Christian to see that they're true. And I think the Harleys understand this. Listen to Joyce's radio program sometime if you want evidence that they approach things from a Christian perspective. http://www.kkms.com/joyceharley.aspGC

Cinny - GC is right - listen to Dr. Harley on Tuesdays and Thursdays, mid-day. His wife is a Christian radio talk show host, and a Christian Singer. But I agree with Graycloud - the Marriage Builders site, books, and principles do not mention faith from a healing standpoint. There are some systems out there with the Christian slant if you want them - but i am totally convinced that thousands of more people are helped by MB because it does not ever mention Christianity. It would be a shame for those folks to miss out on the program because of that.
If you need to prove to your friend anything - it might be that this is the most successful marriage counseling system and group around. A couple of hours on this discussion forum might help.
(tongue in cheek) Why is it neccesary for a system to be labeled? Is your friend looking for MC? If they are hung up you might suggest Garry Smalley to them. It seems to be based on Dr. Harley's system. (Love Tank, etc...)
Good luck!

Does it really matter? The info is just common sense. Harley's books are in the religous section at Border's bookstore, whereas Dr Phil is in the philosphy section. Yet both are on the same subjects.

This was all kind of basically what I told my friend. I told her that the author's are Christian and use their faith to guide them in what they write, but that God is never really mentioned in any of the books so that their work isn't only limited to Christians. (tongue in cheek) Why is it neccesary for a system to be labeled? Is your friend looking for MC? If they are hung up you might suggest Garry Smalley to them. It seems to be based on Dr. Harley's system. (Love Tank, etc...) She definitely isn't looking for MC and anything like that. She just wanted to make sure that everything I was doing right now was founded in the Word. It's not that she didn't believe me when I told her ... I just wanted to give her something concrete. I think showing her this thread should be enough. Thanks for the help!
