I'm 32 y.o. and have been married for 1.5 years. I feel as if we are at a crossroads in the marriage and need to make a decision on whether or not to stay together.

As background, I just started a new job in a new city while wife is still home while looking for a new job. I go home on weekends. Since I've been away, I've started to think how easy it would be to end things and start over. We've also just started trying to have kids, which I was excited about but am not so sure now.

The last year and a half have not been easy. I was in a bad car accident about a year ago and have struggled with some injuries and depression since. I also had a lousy job and we were in a city where we had few friends. With that said, it wasn't all bad and we've had some good times.

I guess the problem is that I just don't feel much of a spark anymore. Conversation has never been our strong point and there are times we have trouble communicating. This bothered me before the wedding but since it's an issue I have with most people, I ignored it. It's just hard because I sometimes try to avoid going out to dinner with her or spending time alone in places where we have to converse. If I'm in a good mood, it's not a problem, but with how down I've been, it can be uncomfortable at times. It doesn't bother her because she is fine with quiet, but it bothers me, even though I'm a quiet person too. I've just been told too many times that its a bad thing to be quiet. And then when I look around at other couples who seem to be enjoying each other and talking, I feel like maybe I made a mistake.

She is also not particularly empathetic or supportive, although she tries. Our roles are reversed in a sense, in that I'm much more sensitive than she is.

There's obviously more to the story but I'll stop there. I want things to work, but am just afraid that I picked the wrong person. And if we're going to end things, we need to do it now. Any advice?

Hi JD

Welcome to MB. Are you familiar with the site, the Basic Concepts, etc? You say you are not feeling the spark anymore. OF COURSE YOU AREN'T! Dr. Harley says a thriving marriage needs 15 hours of undivided attention each week. A struggling one needs more. With your current living situation, how much time do you really have for each other? Also, are you familiar with each other's top emotional needs? Have you taken the Emotional Needs Questionnaire together? It seems to me that your needs are not being met. OF COURSE THEY AREN'T! What can you do to improve your living situation and really give this marriage the effort it needs before you toss in the towel?
