What does it mean if a 40 year old woman listens to Rap Music?
Can a person's choice of music give you insight into their personality?

I'm not sure what it would mean..seems strange to me...but then again I don't like rap music.
I DO believe choice of music gives insight to personality though...but what type of personality would listen to rap?? especially at 40?? Got me!! Let me know when you figure it out...LOL

I have always believed that a person's taste in music speaks volumes about their personality.
When I am getting to know someone, I always ask what kind of music they like.
As far as a 40-year old listening to rap,........wow. I don't know exactly what that says. Maybe she hasn't been exposed to other music. Rap (I guess the kids call it hip hop these days) is easy to hear because it is popular. I think the more unpopular music is, the better. As a rule, not always.
What kind of music do you like? What kind of music do you envision your wife to enjoy?

I was with you until this...lol Rap is rap and hip-hop is hip-hop...they aren't the same...my 15 year old can vouch for that...LOL If I as a 39 year old woman had to choose one over the other to listen to..it would be hip-hop as it's easier on the ears and the words are as bad...bad but not as bad...if you know what i mean. But I still wouldn't voluntarily listen to either...LOL

I guess it depends on how much of it they listen to, and what artists. So much of that genre is extremely negative, and I'd look twice at anyone who puts a large amount of a negative influence in their life -- our mental company has more of an effect on our personalities than most of us care to admit.

I see a lot of negativity and anger in the kids that really get into the rap. I met a guy who had a bunch of rap in his collection and I guess it made me question his maturity. Most of it is obnoxious with lyrics that treat women like meat or curse so much your ears hurt...

Alright!!! This is right up my alley! I sing in a band, and music is and always has been a HUGE part of my life. I listen to EVERYTHING from Mozart (ok, not often, but I do!) to Fitycent. I'm 38. I do listen to mostly the "young crowd" stuff, some rap, a lot of hip hop and you're right, AGE, there is a difference! Why? Because I like it all, I listen to the music, the lyrics, etc. Some of the rap IS very negative, and like movies, I don't poison my mind with that stuff. I also don't like the cursing in some of it, but I do like the beat, and some of it is very uplifting-some of the women artists are also getting "our side" out there too, and I think it's fun. Does it effect me? I'm all grown up. I decide what goes in and it's effect on me. Here's my response to your question, BG: I used to smoke. I didn't like that part of me. When people gave me crap about it I would tell them (and do still about other things), that smoking (music) does not define me and who I am. Just like anything else, you can make all kinds of judgements on people by what they look like, their hair, their car, but my guess is, BG, that you got a free spirit there and I wouldn't chance to think that you can judge her because she listens to rap. (Do you know if it's rap or hip hop?!) Judge her for how she treats you and if she does the things she says she does, if she follows through. Are all people who listen to country depressed? No, just as all who listen to Jimmy Hendrix aren't on drugs (actually Pink Floyd would be better example!). I would hate to think someone would judge me by what I was listening too, because my CD collection would tell you I'm multiple personality! And so am I!

I wouldn't stake my decision about a person on their choice in music, but two things I have to say:
1) My "ex" was big into both the screaming heavy-metal stuff and into rap toward the end of our marriage. I hate both, and both seem to be filled with anger and rage just as he was. It spoke volumns. I also have a friend who likes similar music--she's also a very angry, very depressed person sometimes. So, yes, I think it does say something about the person.
2) If you end up with a person, remember that the music they listen to will often be the music you get to listen to, and vice versa, if you're riding together in a car and such.

I think music speaks to the soul. If you are angry, you want to listen to other people who are angry, if you are sad, you want to turn on the sad stuff, if you are in love, you want the love songs. Becauase it speaks to the soul and lets you feel and express freely what's going on inside of you. So, I think you have to have the emotion first, and then the music. HOWEVER, I think that it can have an effect on you if you aren't able to handle it, just like anything else (video games, movies). We play (at Halloween no less!) at a "mental institution". People who never move move, autistic people dance and can keep time. They smile, they come alive. Because it's music and it effects us all...

Drita, Your description sorta puts into words the stuff that scares me when I think of 40-yr olds that like rap music. And the use of the word "free spirit" doesn't help settle my mind either... yes -> everyone has their preferences and choices... it's what makes us different I suppose....

I assume 50 Cent is Rap? He's a favorite of hers. She also spends an equal amount of time listening to Christian rock. I always thought it was an interesting combination.

I'm sorry Faith! I didn't mean to scare you! : ) Let me just tell you...I'm a very nice girl, I have a good head on my shoulders and I'm lots of fun. I think my life is pretty darn good! I listen to rap, country, classical, 60s, 70s, 80s... you name it. What I listen to does not define who I am. It may, however, define how I'm feeling at that very moment. I'm also a free spirit, I enjoy and live life to it's fullest. So no reason to be scared! ; )

That is an unusual combination. But, I see that as a very good sign: it shows diversity.

I'd say 50 is more hip hop myself. There are some Chistian rap and hip hop artists too. Ever hear of Kayne West? He won a grammy for best rap artist. He's Christian!

I guess I agree with Drita... I have very varied musical tastes, I can enjoy anything from classical to disco (hehe), rock to blues, rap to heavy metal, and oldies to new wave.
For me, it's often a reflection of my mood. If I am happy and smiling, I might put on some oldies or disco, if I am upset or frustrated, heavy metal gets that out of my system, if I am pensive or relaxing, classical and a glass of wine would fit the bill. So I don't think that whatever music I might listen to on a given day should or would be a reflection of me as a person.
Now, Big Guy, if your friend listens primarily or exclusively to music you happen to dislike or find offensive, then that may be something to think about. But if not, I wouldn't let an occasional rap or hip hop song bother me, unless she is one of those people driving down the street with her windows open and music blaring to the point that you spill your coffee in your car when she pulls up close <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.
