Yeah, Pep, I saw DAMAGED a long time ago (before I was a BS). God, I could not believe it. What a tragedy. Talk about consequences of an A. Not for the lightheart!
I am a 'movie' person myself, LM. I am going to check out 'Derailed'. Thanks for being soooooooo considerate NOT to give away the plot!

Being an RN I also witnessed several of my associates smoking too which always irked me to no end.How can you set an example to your patients this way? Well, they didn't.Doctor's too.
When I used to work in Boston,I had to hold my breath whilst I walked thru the cloud of smoke before getting to the doorway.puke.So many employees outside puffing away. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> What a site to see.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Right after I found out about my husbands affair I went to see the movie "Closer".
I hated it for all the obvious reasons, but I loved it too.
It is hard being the BS and watching movies with infidelity at times, however, I love the art in films too much to make me not see a movie.
I particularly am looking forward to "Derailed", as soon as I can get a sitter
FYI - my husband will not go see any movie with infidelity it in whatsoever --kinda ironic

I saw "Closer" too and although I am a big fan of the director,I came away feeling absloutely nothing but disgust for these characters. Not a feel good movie at all.
It's hard for me to watch movies or even be around people who are clearly making all kinds of bad mistakes when it's so obvious what's right. At least to me <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I don't like Julie Roberts anymore in movies and with her personal life,I don't know what the attraction is.

I believe the reason infidelity is the subject line of so many movies and so many song lyrics is because it is so embedded in humanity. Let's face it, infidelity is the norm. With what? 80% of men and 60% of women committing it(and I know statistics vary) and that's just the ones that get caught or admit it. What about all the infidelity that never comes to light?
Just as most people infected with HIV don't even know it, I would wager the same goes for infidelity. For every one case of infidelity that gets uncovered there could could a dozen that remain secret. Imagine not knowing you are/were a BS and going to see an infidelity flick with your FWS/WS?
More popcorn, honey?
Hollywood only tries to make products that will make money, at least they hope it works that way. We live in a nation where a president gets caught in the oval office playing with cigars and he is still loved by many as a great prez, especially women like him, not all, but a lot. Why is that? He was an evangelical Christian as is/was pretty much every other president before and after.
Almost all leaders commit adultery.
JFK committed adultery.
MLK did too.
The norm is infidelity. Fidelity is a place we all try to obtain, but statistics show it's the abnorm. Fidelity is one of those things we'd like to put in a capsule along with maybe some beatles albums and shoot off into space for another life form to know that...that's who we are, but as a whole we don't practice what we preach here on earth.

22 percent of married men have strayed at least once during their married lives.
14 percent of married women have had affairs at least once during their married lives.
Younger people are more likely candidates; in fact, younger women are as likely as younger men to be unfaithful.
70 percent of married women and 54 percent of married men did not know of their spouses' extramarital activity.
5 percent of married men and 3 percent of married women reported having sex with someone other than their spouse in the 1997.
22 percent of men and 14 percent of women admitted to having sexual relations outside their marriage sometime in their past.
90 percent of Americans believe adultery is morally wrong. 50 percent of Americans say President Clinton's adultery makes his moral standard "about the same as the average married man,'' according to a Time-CNN poll.
61 percent of Americans thought adultery should not be a crime in the United states; 35 percent thought it should; 4 percent had no opinion.
17 percent of divorces in the United States are caused by infidelity.

while I believe that some statistics are worthless..especially those that rely on people's honesty... rather than hard core number crunching facts...... and i am sure there are as many different statistics as there are people...
I don't think the norm is infidelity......

Mr. Lemonman,
I was using the term boycott loosely...as in "personal boycott" not some sort of legisaltion (what a waste of tax dollars! Not to mention such a bill would be ultimately illegal.)
My desire to encourage a boycott was not to ban certain films, but actually to expand the pool of types of films produced.... to force that invisible free market hand---to incite Hollywood to produce less of these type of movies and spend more money making positive hero movies. Its a money making industry responding to anticipated market demand...but I think a lot of people see whats out there, not just what they want to see.
NY Times recently published an article about several producers meeting with U.S. scientists to encourage them to write scripts including scientist as heros...this was in response to a drop in interest in science by teens/majors declared at U.S. institutions....and to enrouage a new pool of scripts. I thought it was really interesting that the industry acknowledges itself as a cultural-social force....but I think in the end money talks the loudest...
Maybe seeing less films that promote heros I dont like...will mean there are more films produced with heros I believe in???
Did you see that film because you REALLY wanted to see it, or for lack of better choice? <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

while I believe that some statistics are worthless..especially those that rely on people's honesty... Exactly what I was saying. Most folk will never admit infidelity unless they are A)caught or B)come clean, so why would statistics prove anything except that infidelity IS widespread. It is the NORM, as much so as Fidelity. I'd say it's 50/50 conservatively. rather than hard core number crunching facts...... and i am sure there are as many different statistics as there are people... The day we get hard core number crunching facts will be a day in the future when everybody walks around with microchips underneath their skin recording their every move. Yes there are many different statistics out there as there are people and they all have the underlying impression that different people have different reasons for committing adultery. Ask yourself how many people around you that you know have dealt with infidelity and then think about the ones that have experienced it that haven't told you or don't even know themselves. Not every one gets caught or comes clean, surely not. The people on this forum are probably just the tip of the iceberg of infidelity and NO ONE knows just how big that iceberg is. Why is the divorce rate so high if the iceberg is so small? Sorry, I'm just cynical of the human race. War, hatred and all else we "frown" upon happens every single day, so what would make adultery any different? I guess what I should have said is I believe infidelity is just as normal as fidelity. Hollywood loves an audience.

What about all the infidelity that never comes to light? so the real stats would probably be 99% of the men and 80% o the women? Scary <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I too saw "Closer" and triggered BIG TIME at some of the scenes, but COULD NOT take my eyes off Natalie Portman.
We saw "Capote" which was very, VERY good and I don't think had any infidelity in it....although Capote and one of the murderers seemed to have an EA going! (until they hung the guy)
