My doctor has recently doubled my AD (Prozac) from 20mg to 40mg. I've been taking this dose for just over a week now.

Thing is, I feel awful. I had side effects when I first started on them at 20mg - shakes, panic attacks, wild mood swings - but now I just feel soooo depressed!

I've had a very bad week, and I do understand that I should expect side effects now I've doubled the dose. But is what I'm feeling normal?

BTW - doctor suggested doubling the dose as I have just filed for divorce. He said he thought I'd probably need it. Personally, I thought I was doing OK - I feel much worse now than I did before.

Is this quite normal? Will I feel better soon?

Alph.

Alphin, I have no experience of AD's but in the summer, when I was recovering from pneumonia, I had terrible palpitations and took 'Kalms' from Holland & Barratt. Having seen my WH rattle from medication, I would try anything else first. It doesn't sound good to just 'up' the meds because of divorce. If it doesn't feel right or you feel altered, go back to the original dose.

Also Alph, with all the horrible financial crap you've had to deal with this past week, it's no wonder you felt so low.TT

Hi Alph,

You should tell your doctor how you are feeling with this increased dosage.Usually, improvement in mood/symptoms of depression is expected to be seen over a period of weeks but in your case,it's only been a week but you feel *much worse.

Prozac has come under fire for it's suicidial ideation effects in some young children and adults and this may not be the case for you at this point but your doctor should be aware that you feel worse so he can make an assessment of whether to keep you on it,taper down or discontinue, etc.

Good luck.

O

Alph, def talk to dr about how you are feeling. Also, if you are taking antibiotics with AD's they can effect how the AD's work in your system. Something that many drs forget to mention.

I take Lexapro and I love it. Works great for my OCD and depression. But that's me. I went through a 6 month period of finding the right med that worked. I tried Zoloft, Prozac, Effexor (which worked great but sent my blood pressure WAY up) and finally Lexapro at several dosages and settling on the one I'm on. My dr has told to me increase the dosage when the stress level increases and that's under his supervision.

Lots of things can effect how the meds work in our bodies. Talk with dr. to make sure what's happening with you is right. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Alph,
The first a/d I had taken, made me sick and feel horrible, then I was put on Lexapro and feel great. It has definately helped keep my emotions on a little better keel.

In the end, I have nothing to lose but everything to gain, by trying to save my marriage.
