I know that I posted that I wouldn't be coming around any more but I thought that I would share this news while I had the time.
For those that remember....our 7 yr old daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis about a year ago. The Doc had her wearing a brace at night while she slept. Pretty much 10 to 12 hours a day.
He never order any tests....MRI's or anything.
He was dropped from our Insurance and we had to look for a new Doc.
We found one and he DID order all the tests because her curvature (around 24 degrees) was going in the opposite direction that a normal scoliosis patients would.
After the MRI results were read it was confirmed that she DID NOT have scoliosis....but a tumor/mass on her spine.
The new Doc sent her to a Pediatric Neuro Doc and he ordered a CAT Scan.
Well....the results are in!
The Neuro Doc is SURE that the mass is benign (he couldn't classify it as a tumor because it seems to be more like a calcium deposit) and he does not want to put her through any surgery unless she starts complaining of back pain or her curve gets worse.
So....she will go back to her Orthopedic Doc in about 6 months for new X-Rays to determine if the degree of her curvature is getting worse or stabalizing and then we will go from there.
She had a really big growth spurt over the last 2 months and she actually seems to be a little straighter. Her reflexes were better than they have been and she actually almost touched her toes when she bent over at the Docs office.
We are all really relieved at this point.
Thanks for reading.

Miss Priss, I am so happy to read this but it angers me that the former doc did not order tests. grrr...
BTW, my 16 y/o nephew was just diagnosed with the same thing but the mass in on his chest. It has caused some curvature as well to his spine.

Our daughter had scoliosis with a 40 Degree curvature. No brace, but she had surgery and it is now reduced to a 5 Degrees and she is healthy as can be. That was a very difficult surgery for a child to go thru but the surgeons were good and got her back to normal again.
We never noticed it but the schools do test for the kids and they noticed it and told us about it. It takes about a year for the total recovery period to be over.
Our daughter actually got shorter as the scoliosis worthened. After surgery, she was 3/4 of an inch taller.

congratulations! prayers answered is so cool.
I would for my own peace of mind still get one more opinion.
One of my patients on friday was a lady with a mass at base of spine...but it was migrated due to her previous xh of thyroid ca. Thyroid was the source of origin and we can usually take care of that quite easily.
She had a small curve btw.
will keep praying.
but it is probably great news.
What would be dd's outcome if it were removed? I mean, would her curve improve? Children and their bones are much more adaptable than ours are...and they are growing.
Again, I'd get a second opinion and research it all I could. I'll try to do that for you ok? May take a few days...probably after monday. will ask some docs too.
