I want to know where that training program is where one could be a primary care doc (see kids and families in the clinic), be an Interventional Radiologist and place stents in the cerebral arteries and do angiograms, be a cardiologist and do a Transesophageal Echo and then do a heart cathetherization and then top it off with 2 percocet and a wise crack.

Better than that was the real woman doc (oncologist) that confronted the doctor-Bachelor on why he didn't pick her to stay on The Bachelor. If you're on the left coast, it is priceless and well worth the pain and agony of watching the rest of the show. A friend called me and told me to turn it on - oh my gosh!!!!!! This woman actually told him during the "get to know you" part that she was ready to move on to the "reproductive phase." When he didn't pick her, she confronted him and asked what's wrong with her, "is she too short, are her (ahem - edited for good taste) too small?" She then went on and on about how he's just like all those other male docs who don't appreciate a professional woman. Absolutley hysterical - the show itself is a sad commentary on the world today, but this was priceless!

I was just on the receiving end of an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedure.
This was followed two days later by the much more fun laparoscopic cholecystectomy. I awoke screaming and the recovery room guy was freaking out. Pretty cool...
Lotsa fentanyl, followed by more fentanyl followed by morphine. Sorta worked. Got back to the room and some vicodin to start the afternoon off followed by the push button fentanyl...

Two days later, I get another endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography to install a plastic stent in my common bile duct and they kick me out of the hospital like 4 hours later.

And the joy is I get to have another endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for stent removal in a few weeks.

House is cool.

Hey Lemonman - Tivo hasn't made it to HK, nor has House so "no comment".

However, I have a question for you. My mum has to have a stent put into an aortic aneurism. She's having the op done at the Royal Brompton in London which is a wonderful hospital and hopefully she'll be in good hands. I'm worried though because she had a heart valve replacement 3 yrs ago. She's in quite poor health generally although apparently the valve is fine (human). When she had the valve, she was told that it would last about 10 yrs. She has taken this as gospel and tells us now she only has 7 yrs to go. Is 10 yrs a usual life expectancy for a valve or do they sometimes last much longer? Anyway, back to the stent ... should I be getting on a plane. How risky is this procedure and is it increased because of her previous heart op?

The Aortic Aneurysm stent procedure (in the right hands) is a reasonably safe procedure and certainly safer than having am open aortic aneurysm/dissection repair. Your mom's "poor health" is probably one of the reasons why she is having a stent and not open repair procedure....to reduce her operative risk.

The risk of the procedure should NOT be affected by her previous heart valve surgery because the stent is placed percutaneously and that does not involve "opening" the chest, etc..

The tissue valve that your Mum has does usually last for 10 years...but keep in mind that is a general guideline. The valve can certainly function longer (or shorter), but her thinking that she only has 7 years to go on the warranty is not really reality.

I suspect your mum will be just fine.

I'll say a short prayer today for her.

I love House. But even having no medical training, I've always wondered why his team does all the radiology, etc. And yes, he did blackmail that surgeon.

Thanks LM. I think I may go when the procedure is scheduled. I missed her last big op and it's not fair on my sister to always be the primary carer. Will let you know how it goes. TT
