Hi Kim, thanks for your concern. I have been dealing with Father problems all week out in West Texas and just got back home tonight. My father is terminally ill and refuses to go to hospice where he can get the best care. I ended up hiring round the clock care and threatened to kick his [censored] if he fires this group of nurses like he did the last. [he threatened to call the sheriff and/or shoot them ] Then, I called Adult Protective Services on him and they sent out Nurse Rachett, who told him if he runs off his nurses that she can take him to the big house. [big house=hospice] Lord, that man is hardheaded...

And then he started smoking again [one of his buddies smuggled him some cigarettes and marijuana] - while on oxygen - and I had to confiscate his cigarettes.

So, it's been a very long week.

How are things with you? How is visitation working out with no intermediary?

Hugs to you, Mel...

I had to manage the care of my elderly, crochety grandparents for several years...

I know how difficult the whole process can be...

Thankfully my H was with me when they both passed away last year..

I made it happen..a joyful life..filled with peace, contentment, happiness and fabulocity.

Good golly, Mel, your dad sounds a character! Are you planning on writing about him when he's gone?

Good for you Mel,
You take a week that had to be really difficult, and make it sound almost fun.

I admire you for that.

Hope most things are well with you.

Awwww ((((((Mel)))))).

Being in the health field, I can relate to how people can be when they're very ill, sometimes it's not very pretty.

My prayers are with you.

And I agree with the others, you are amazing.

God Bless,

(((Mel))) -

Your Dad does sound like a handful - looks like you are dealing with him amazingly. I hope your Dad knows how much of a blessing you are! Glad you are home safely and that you checked in for us! We missed you here.

Kim

BTW - things are working out pretty good so far without an intermediary. WH was 20 minutes late the other day, but other than that no problems. Thanks for asking!

Hi Mel,

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my father to cancer so I feel your pain. It is never easy to lose a parent, no matter the age. Gosh Mel, you give so freely of your time to others and yet I have never heard you mention any troubles of your own (other than that oil change incident ).

I think the Wonderings have you pegged. Now we all know where you get your spunk!

Thinking of you and sending you hugs. I hope you are finding the time to take care of yourself as well.

Thanks, Mimi. I am very sorry about your parents. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose them both so close together.

Thanks RiverTam, carnation, and Caren. stillseeking, he is a real character that is always trying to find a way to be alone and be left alone. He does not want a pack of bossy women in there interfering with him so he and I went round and round about bringing these nurses in. He insisted he would be just fine, which is nonsense. When I set up the appointment to interview the home health agency, they called ahead to confirm the appointment. My dad intercepted the phone call in his bedroom. Shortly afterwards my uncle comes out and says "he is in there laying a big line of BS on someone! He is saying "oh no, I have plenty of help already and dont need anything. My daughter is here, my brother is here, my girlfriend is here every day and we go places together! blah blah, blah, blah...."

See, my dad is bedridden and can barely make it to the restroom even with a walker and a nurse. [sometimes not at all] So I went in there and said "dad, who were you talking to?" Well, that wiley old cat had told the home health care people not to come, that he didn't need their help! I had to call them back and convince them that we wanted them to come. They won't come if the patient doesnt want them so I had to assure them he would let them in.

What amazes me most is that he can be practically comatose and incoherent one minute and then the next he can be sitting up telling some big story - with minute detail - about a basketball game he attended in the 60s. [Texas Western vs Kansas in the Lubbock Coliseum in 1966, the year TW swept the championship] We had been sitting there talking about the movie, Glory Road, and my dad interrupted us with several interesting details. He knew Jojo White, the player from Kansas and was a big KU fan. He also had known the coach of Texas Western for several years.

Mrs. Wondering, you had better bring some good hawg tying rope and and your bestest pistola if you think you can get this ole girl down! My poor son says he isn't scared, he thinks he can take me. Dream on, little boy!

I guess he won't sign over his POWER OF ATTORNEY to you so that you can make all the decisions without "HIS PERMISSION".

That's what I had to do....

Yes, I had him sign over medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney to myself and my uncle. HOWEVER, that only takes force when he cannot make decisions and he will not go to the hospice willingly.

It was all I could do to force him to allow these nurses to come in. I did that by telling him if he didn't he would be forcibly taken to the hospice. That is why I called in Adult Protective Services, because they are the only ones who can legally force him to go into the hospice if they feel he is in danger. He would be in danger if he were left there alone.

Mel,

I'm sorry about your struggles with your Dad. Life gets a bit ragged at the ends. He sounds like a fine rascal and whatever happens, will probably be "all right" in his own way.

Mel, I'm sorry to 'hear' about your dad's illness, but it sounds if you're doing an excellent job in taking care of him. May God bless you for that.
