Have you seen the IMAX rover flick? Roving Mars Seizes An Opportunity With Spirit Might go see it at Air & Space this weekend. WAT --------------- How to detect bogus science: 1. claim pitched directly to media 2. discoverer says powerful establishment is suppressing work 3. effects involved are at the limits of detection 4. evidence is anecdotal 5. belief is credible because "it's endured for centuries" 6. discoverer has worked in isolation 7. new laws of nature are proposed to explain discovery

Yo - haven't been fishing lately. Son and I going to Fla in late March for our annual spring break visit to my Dad's. Planning a trip to Canada in July - one of those fly into the lake in a float plane gigs. You? Haven't been in about a year. Live in the mountains now. Grew up fishing Islamorada. Hard to top that in the rivers pulling out trout I used to use for bait fish.
Nice addenda. But one would not expect a well defined system boundary in junk science. So I didn't mention it.

WAT: No, haven't saw it yet. Some of us were invited 2 a preview, but not yours truly. I've heard good things, though. I have some worries, 2. The 2 Nova episodes about MER were... ...awful, and the 3rd PBS production, "What Went Right", was atrocious. But that's my scientist complaining mostly. It was a narrowly-focused "people movie", about a few of the people involved in building the rovers, and about building the rovers. Very little about the science of going 2 Mars (which, in my humble opinion, was why we built the things in the first place). I had a few cameos in the 2nd Nova show, but at only 40 minutes, I doubt I'm in the Imax flick. Probably a good thing! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Still, I will go see it (whenever it's around, that is). The computer animation stuff I've seen 2 date is first-rate. -ol' 2long

DS and I are attending opening night at the Omnidome this weekend. Free tickets even.
It's received good reviews around here.
There was a series of articles by the skeptic guy in Scientific American a couple of years ago that listed a whole bunch of junk science tells. Cold fusion was one of the examples he walked through.
I remember spotting 2long in the Nova program. It took a minute to register: Hey, I know that guy from somewhere... and by then he was gone.
Edit: spelling. (Well, I are an engineer. I took special how not to spell correctly classes in college.)

Hi Aphelion - yea, the cold fusion gig is a classic (Pons/Fleischman?). Guilty of #1 and especially #3 (maybe #6?).
My XW once claimed to achieve cold fusion in the washing machine after some of my socks got cleaned somehow.

Aphelion-your socks are in a laundry basket at my house. It's chock full of onesies that I cannot (physically cannot) throw away because I'm expecting their mates to appear in my dryer at any moment. If I were to throw them away, that would be the day their buddies decided to take a trip to see their lost loves....if that were to happen you'd have to become a hippie and wear sandles all the time - even in winter.
