Well I am a bit surprised no one jumped on this thread. Perhaps the word "polyfideltiy" throws people off, Polygamy, polyamory, polyfidelity, are all "nice" words for cheating. But it is what it is no matter how you try to disguise it with three dollar words.
Perhaps the members here on the "Just Found Out" board are too emotionally raw to watch a show on that subject. Since I am 5 years into recovery I did make note of the air date, made myself some popcorn, propped my feet up and laughed myself silly at that doofus of a WS.
There is another program on this subject (but in that program it`s called polyamory) that I have watched a couple of times. It`s a documentary called "When Two Won`t Do". This program is not funny at all. If you haven`t seen it the producer of this documentary (Maureen) is filming her own foray into "polyfideltiy/polyamory/cheating". Maureen is the partner pushing for this lifestyle. Her BF is not into it at all, is hurt by it and uses various methods of not very subtle manipulation in order to put a stop to it. Maureen is not daunted in the least and completely ignores her BF`s feelings. She was very pushy, full of herself and selfish.
Maureen becomes involved in an LTA with an MM who had been experimenting with polyamory in his own marriage. The wife is not happy with his new relationship with Maureen and is extremely jealous. Maureen and the wife have several confrontations face to face, via e-mail and on the phone. Maureen is unwilling to accept that the wife is the "primary partner" in this arrangement. The wife senses her marriage is crumbling and then she commits suicide. Maureen is quick to absolve herself and her lifestyle choices of any blame and remains totally insensitive to her own BF`s pain. She continues her relationship with her newly widowed lover. And she remains on the lookout for new partners to add to her drama. And Maureen`s BF sticks by her side.
I watched this documentary twice because I could not believe what I was seeing. I could not fathom someone being so wrapped up in themselves and oblivious to the pain they caused others. I watched it again thinking I missed something....there had to be some sort of explaination...some redeeming quality of Maureen's that I missed the first time.
I did come to the realisation that the REAL "fix", the real hook for all of the players in this was not the sex at all. It was the drama. They all displayed a Junior High mentality. Even the BF was getting whatever he needed out of this setup. I have now come to believe that people who live this kind of open sexual lifestyle are drama junkies. They thrive on dramatic emotional crises. I thnk that`s why the wife`s suicide did not deter any of these people from their lifestyle choices. I mean really... a suicide would have to be the ultimate dramatic high for an emotional crisis junkie.
It was a sad and disturbing look at "People of the Lie".
