A “sea daddy” is a well-experienced officer who mentors a younger officer when the young officer is green as grass and of no use to himself or others around him.

It sounds like a vaguely shifty term ... does it apply only in the Navy (hence the 'sea') or in all branches? (Just curious.)

Well, the navy barely counts.

But in the army, there are no "sea daddys".

We call them something else.

Usually 1st Sergeant.

I've never heard it applied in the AF either. In the AF he's usually called "the guy who pissed off the commander so bad he has to baby sit the butter bars."

Hey! I resent that (7 years, USN)

Longhorn - I know that we had something of a falling out on my thread several weeks back, partly due to something I said to you that came out wrong (i.e., I could have worded it better).

While I might not always agree with what you say, you have my respect as a (retired?) senior NCO. I may have left the Navy wearing railroad tracks (O-3), but I always knew who got the work done, and counted myself blessed when I had the fortune of a solid NCO working for and with me.

Yes "Sea Daddy" would be that guy in the Navy that chewed your a$$ one moment, and saved it the next. Regardless of rank. It was an "unoffical" title the Navy has recently adopted to a required fuction for all junior enlisted.

Younger enlisted personnel are required to have a Senior NCO assigned or chosen. There are now callled "Mentors" and is actually kept on record within the administrative department.

Ok then what would be considered a "liberty buddy" and would it be unusual for them to be both?

Huh...'sea daddy' sounds like what most of the 'good' NCO's are in the Army.

I was a junior NCO most of my career in the Army. Section Chief/Squad Leader/Platoon Sgt. But my age and TOS (Time of Service) was equivilant to that of our mid/upper range NCO's. Because of that, I was a 'mentor' in a lot of ways to a lot of troops. Definitely to those that were directly under me. I was definitely the guy who was the first to chew their butt when they screwed up, and the guy who looked out for them too. I always just assumed that responsibility came with the stripes.

Google says a "liberty buddy" is someone a seaman goes ashore with. Essentially, the buddies watch out for each other and keep each other out of trouble. One must wonder, though, if the reverse isn't sometimes the case--that what one doesn't think of to create mischief, the other one does.

Very true Longhorn. Alot of locations overseas. The chain of command will require sailors only travel in groups of 2 or more (your liberty buddy/buddies).

I ended up in the backseat of a Spanish police car once because of my liberty buddy.

Also if one person in your group where to get in trouble, your libery buddy would be standing tall with him in front of the old man come question and answer time.
