There are two kinds of lies, remember.
Commission - active redirection away from the truth. Fabrication from whole cloth.
Omission - passive dissembling. Not saying the truth. Regarding Aphelion's comment quoted above, I am grateful this was pointed out. My FWH takes pride (unwarranted IMHO) that he doe not lie but does not consider the failure to speak the truth as being the same as a lie. In spite of the fallout from his deceipt via OMISSION, he still persists in his belief that he doesn't lie and that somehow grants him some moral Good Housekeeping Seal Of Approval.

Omission - passive dissembling. Not saying the truth Either way once you get in that "self protective" mode of lying it can become a way of life. Lying by omission about my A for 10 years bled over into every aspect of my life. I became a liar. I am so thankful for the day that I was outed painful as it was because I became free of the lies. Lying is not comfortable for me anymore.

"self protective" mode of lying = attempts to control based on fear

After thinking about this some more, I think most people lie when they don't want to tell the truth.

Pat Robertson
I can usually count on doing the opposite and it'll be about right.
edit: I was living 1/4 mile from the ocean front in Va. Beach in Oct. 1985 when hurricane Gloria was bearing down on us. We were evacuated.
As you may remember, the storm went offshore and spared Va. Beach, also home of CBN. Pat took credit for "saving" the city. (Of course, the storm subsequently slammed into Long Island. Pat's response: "Well, they're Catholics." I swear I am not making this up.)
Guess there's too many Catholics in New Orleans, too.

Well, no JL. I think I'll stop right there. Maybe on another day I'll tell the story about when I was living in Charlotte in 1988 when Pat was running for Prez. He carried all the local precincts in the primary. That'll have to hold you for now.

They/we lie because they/we do not have trust or faith in the ~system~ of "honesty is the best policy".
Lying is an attempt to control the outcome of an unknown, so that the results will be favorable to them/us.
Lying is an "insurance policy" for a person who lacks trust in honesty/truth. Oh, Pep, We've had this discussion in a different context on a different thread...all of your statements apply there as well... What do you mean by this? Low

"most of the time .... "
What do you mean by this?
Low I think there are additional reasons we lie ... but those are inconsequential to what usually goes on .... I was thinking about the lies I used to tell as a kid .... they were really GREAT ones .... which should have been true .... a sort of wishful/fanciful/magical thinking sort of lie Example: I used to tell my friends that my Grandpa (who lived 300 miles away and I saw him once a year) trained circus ponies ... and in my mind He did ....

touche Pepperband.
it's the PAIN THEY FEAR..thus they lie.
ironically, INCREDIBLE PAIN can kill an affair. if the pain the infidel...YEA THE INFIDEL...goes through in getting a divorce or a separation is more than the joy experienced in the new affair, they usually come home.
fear, pain, are all powerful motivators, yet people do all they can do to avoid them.
my xh doesn't know truth if it walks up and hits him with her coach handbag.
and Yea...i like the term INFIDEL...b/c that's what they're doing.
also like the term SITH LORD...perfect for my xh. interchangable words.
people lie, cheat and steal to avoid pain. people lie and cheat and steal to avoid fear.
and on that same note...if you can follow this.
people will also end destructive behaviors (drinking, drugs, infidelity) and seek to obtain help for mental health disorders, seek help for finances, go to work everyday, and basically be a good law abiding person to AVOID PAIN AND FEAR.
fear and pain are BOTH POSTIVE AS WELL AS NEGATIVE MOTIVATORS.

I know a secret about WAT ... one I haven't even shared with him yet Oooooo - tell me, tell me! That way I can substantiate it! Les see, what could it be? That my Plan B claim that I hadn't felt such freedom since I stopped wearing underwear was, in fact, a joke - and thus literally, a lie? But how would Pep know this? Hmmmmmmmmmm WAT
