I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about filing for a tax extension?
how long of an extension do you get?
is there a penalty?
anything special that needs to be done?
i'd appreciate any help!

we always do extensions ...you have til october
You have to pay a penalty if you owe.

we would owe about $1,000.00 federal if filing together-get a refund for state
i would owe nothing if filing separate

eav...you only extend teh deadline for filing, not for paying. If you owe federal pay it with the extension otherwise you're facing interest AND penalties.
I do not know your situation but you do NOT have to file married, jointly if your H if you're not living together at end of year. I am a CPA. If you ahve any other questions shoot!
