Here is a strange one. I know my daughter and her BF have been thinking of marriage. She told me the other night that she told him when he wants to marry her he has to ask permission first
not from her dad......from me.
Since all that has happened during the entire marriage and the resulting divorce none of my children have had a good relationship with their dad ("Ill see him only if I'm trapped into it" relationship) I didnt expect that he would ask her dad for permission. I didnt however think that she would want him to ask me.
I dont know how to handle this or what to say??????
any advice????????

You know Sunrise, your post speaks loudy on how to raise your kids right, and shows how much not only your approval matters in your daughters eyes, but how much she loves and respect you. Be honored......and if he is worthy say yes.

I am very honored. She has grown up incredibly in the last year. She was a little on the wild side (not really bad, just some misteps along the way), a result I guess of so much stress in the house and a father who acted younger that my yongest child. My ex didnt believe in discipline or chores so there was always a psychological tug of war. But all in all, I was always there for everything.
Even as my heart was broken and I had to pick up the broken pieces of my life, go back to school, learn to handle everything on my own AND deal with how devastated my children were.
The past year I saw her grow from troubled young woman without serious goals to an admirable photographer with a plan for her beautiful life. And I have also seen the same growth in her boyfriend of 3 years.
I just am still uncomfortable with what she wants him to approach me with..however I guess anyone..Dads included would be nervous at that prospect as well.

I think it's a great idea. I'd be ready with a HN/HN book on hand to give him to read. Tell him you will hold your permission until after he reads the book.
BTW. I'm a Gilmore girls fan, and this just happened on the show this week. The mom had a stipulation before she would agree, and he did it. Then she gave them a family engagement ring to use. (What better use for our engagement rings - so the kids don't go into debt?)

On Gilmore girls, Lane's boyfriend proposed. Her mom asked what his future held, and he said he was a musician, so she demanded he write a hit song before he proposed. Then her mom worked with Zach on the song and after allowed him to propose.
I have to say, I never thought of using my ring, and I don't want to have it remade or wear the stone, so given how expensive diamonds are, if the kids are young it might be a good use. I do believe it could be cathartic, especially to use it for a couple with the tools (MB) to form a good foundation. My ring has two small diamonds on each side, and I plan to have diamond studs made for each girl, because they are the best thing to come from the marriage, and in my life.
