I thought I'd post where there are 1000's of people at any given time! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'm heading down the KC way in a few weeks with 2 9yo girls. We'll be there over the weekend and I'm looking for ideas to keep them occupied! Since the parks aren't open yet, what else can we do?

I've heard something of Science City....what exactly is that?

I'm a couple hundred miles West of KC and haven't really spent too much time up there but can tell you that one evening would be well spent walking through the Plaza. It's basically the downtown area where they have all kinds of window shopping with some stores for the younger croud. Don't know about this time of year, but they also have horse drawn carriage rides. It's actually quite beautiful, there are statues and fountains and just all kinds of cool things. It's awesome at Christmas time with 100's of thousands of lights......

I've heard Union Station is cool and honestly don't know a thing about there zoo. What I will say, though you've probably already got it covered, they have tons of B&B there extremely resonable priced...

100 miles west must make you somewhere in the boondocks of KS. My SIL is from Hutchinson...is that close?

I was up there this year during Christmas time and they had round carriages all lit up with lights that looked like they stepped off the pages of Cinderella. But they also had multiple seaters for the whole fam.

And Heck no, I'm right in the thick of Kansas. Sitting here at the Junction on I-70 & I-135. A little over two hours to KC, a little over an hour to Wichita, and Hutch is about 45 miles south of me....

Oh.... One time when I was down to the Plaza they had all kinds of Mickey Mouse statues.... IT WAS TOO KEWL....

RULES TO ENTER KANSAS

Applies to each person as they enter Kansas. Learn & remember:

East Coast and California-types pay particular attention!

1. Pull your droopy pants up. You look like an idiot.

2. Let's get this straight; it's called a "gravel road." I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you're going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.

6. If that cell phone rings while a bunch of pheasants are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don't have it up to your ear at the time.

7. Yeah, we eat catfish and mountain oysters. You really want sushi & caviar? It's available at the corner bait shop.

8. The "Opener" refers to the first day of pheasant season. It's a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November.

9. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age.

10. No, there's no "vegetarian special" on the menu. Order steak. Or you can order the Chef's Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham & turkey.

11. When we fill out a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables, and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup.

12. You bring "coke" into my house, it better be brown, wet, and served over ice. You bring "Mary Jane" into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair.

13. High School Football is as important here as the Lakers and the Knicks, and a dang site more fun to watch.

14. Yeah, we have golf courses. But don't hit the water hazards - it spooks the fish.

15. Colleges? Try K-State or KU or abunch a'others. They come outta there with an education plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at passing pickups when they come home for the holidays.

16. Anhydrous Ammonia is used as a fertilizer! Let us catch you trying to "cook" something with it and we will "cook" your you-know-what!

Did they make that the official motto, boy I hope not, cause lemme tellya what WAT, I've been to some of dem dere small towns and I guaraaaanteee ya that if'n we did evolve it must of only happen to the bigger city folks.... Heck, if we change our motto, half the people may be forced to leave the state.

I saw this one feller the other day, I tell you what, he looked like he was only about 1/2 an evolutionary step up from a chimp.... Hold on a second, come to think of it, I was lookin in the mirror.... NEVERMIND....

Kansas....closer to everywhere else, than anywhere else...

Kansas City is like any other major metropolitan area. Swope Park Zoo is not the best zoo in the country, but it's a good one. They recently spent a few million $$ on several upgrades. The have an Imax Theatre there.

The Plaza area is very nice. Located on Brush Creek, there are some of the more nationally recognized upscale shopping stores there. Many very good places to eat, as well. They offer some scenic boat rides on Brush Creek when it's not in "flash flood" mode, and there are no tornado warnings. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Kansas City is known for BBQ, and there are several really good ones to choose from...Smokestack, Aurther Bryant, Gates, LG's and a host of others.

Westport has more "boutique" shopping areas, and again several nice places to eat. It's also an area where many of the popular nightspots are located.

The Science museum is near Crown Center, which is located mid-town, and located in a building owned by Hallmark Cards. They have a childrens exhibit there that is free, I think, whereas they charge for the Science museum, which is located across the street (north) in the old train station (a marvelous old building).

There is also Worlds of Fun, a nice amuesment park, Midland Theatre, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (formerly Sandstone), Memorial Hall and a number of large clubs which will all feature live entertainment. Kansas City was the home of Charlie Parker, jazz great, and there are assorted jazz clubs around town, as well.

The Kansas Superspeedway is out in Wyandotte County, one of the latest additions to the NASCAR list of world class facilities, and nearby is the Lone Wolf Lodge, where you can stay and have access to a very large indoor water park. There is a new mall out there too, as well as a huge outlet called Nebraska Furniture Mart and a Cabellas, where your kids can do some rock climbing for free. And just down the way a bit is the Woodland, home to live and closed circuit greyhound racing, including paramutual betting, if you are feeling lucky.

For those so inclined, there is a really large Harrah's and a couple of other Vegas like casinos, complete with entertainment.

Kansas City is a fun place to go, and your only limitation would be your imagination. After the "slight", I'd even show WAT a good time there (for a small fee) <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
