I do think the threads that they start are really their own concern. There does not seem to be a finite amount of space on these boards. The only things I will say about IV... and I admit being pretty uninformed here (just getting this from a resident of their village)...some FWP's seem to be developing pretty close ties with members of the opposite sex over there. I just think certain boundries need to be watched. When this concern comes from one of their own... it needs to be taken seriously. And the other thing that has proven to be a bit of a cancer on their own thread (for some posters and not others) is their support for a WS who by all accounts has now broken promises not only to her H but to her friends. I got a bit hot headed about this a few days ago and have since calmed down and will leave it at that. But the humor they spread over there will certainly have a therapeutic effect on those in need. There are some good people in that thread and if their posts are helping others... I say let them spread anywhere they choose.

Everyone keeps making tangential points. The quest of this thread is the elemental question: does IV need multiple threads?
Amid all the consternation over P's time on his hands the question remains unanswered.
Can anyone - anyone - defend the need for a second IV thread?

hmmm, maybe this thread should have been continued in another thread to save on space?
There are plenty of threads out there to join and debate the pros and cons of the Idiots.
hmmm, I bet if Idiotville didn't get bashed on so much there would be much less drama about Idiotville.

I can't say "defend". As I mentioned erlier. I can say if it were not for the spin off threads being created, I would not have gone into IV and read.
So it did serve a purpose.

Well, not that it will matter, and I just normally ignore them....but I think all of these threads are counter-productive to the board...JMHO and not a popular one for sure. Whether it's the fantasy role playing, fuzzy boundaries, chat-room quality, cliquishness, even higher risk of addictiveness, and of course the time it takes from needy posters....none of it seems very attractive to me. They have helped to spinoff numerous other private boards that double the risk of any of those things, because they are outside of the few safeguards that actually exist here and I'd be surprised if an affair or two hasn't begun it's initial start on one of these threads too. I'm not sure why the administrators don't shut them down and it hardly seems worth disabling PMs if they don't.....but it's their call.

sorry star...it's not the thread or their existance that create the environment for an affair...
it's personal CHOICE
I don't think Mr. Harley has to slap anyones hand....and oversee free will and choice...
....although it would be appra-po if someone said idiotville made me have an affair...
couldn't argue that one... but IDIOTVILLE thread would NOT be the cause...
I have NEVER read idiotville....though I have played an idiot on the net
I AM AN ADULT... though I am prone to tantrums
and I can CHOOSE NOT to read that which does NOT pertain to my agenda...
heck if I had my way there'd be a kabillion posts about how awesome I am... now that would make some GOOOOOOOOOOOD reading....

I'm 58 years old. Intimidation is what I do best. Of course, it's usually most effective on my grandchildren, but what the heck--I'll take what I can get.

So it did serve a purpose. This was the reason for the spin off thread, so you all would read it, because some of you don't visit. I would say, it worked. MEDC - You like us, you like us.

Is it really important to have a thread that discusses the need for a different thread??????????????
I just don't get this thread at all and feel that it's silly.
Why do you two (Todd and Pio) care? Let those that want to "speak" in Idiotville do so. They're helping one another. What bearing does it have on you or anyone else on this board?

TAC,
Defend the need?
Issue 1: Just the fact that one would make this statement implies that it is harmful in some way. So the cornerstone of the argument is faulty. One must just choose to ignore it. What is there to defend? It is not harmful, it is merely annoying.
Issue 2: The argument that other peoples threads are falling by the wayside, or the "front pagers get the help." Well that is demonstratably false. There are lots of good threads that get the infamous ^bump^ to help people out. Those of us savvy in the operation of the board will go back and bump a helpful thread. If you look at the dates, many times it is MONTHS and the seldom read thread is pages and pages back. Yet, miraculously, it is ressurected at the appropriate times. This is true for peoples personal journal-type threads where their individual histories are placed. Other MBers who are concerned will drag them up to get attention.
Issue 3: It is NOT against the rules posted by the moderators of the board. So it is not wrong, merely something you don't like.
Issue 4: (My favorite, which I call the I'm the smartest man in the world sydrome). I see from your registration date you have been on the forum for just a few months. SURELY someone has considered this topic before, or do you think nobody has thought of this in the history of the board? The issue has come up before. And died before.
Let me explain to you my circle analogy. One of my favorites. I want you to draw two concentric circles (one inside the other). The inner circle is your "Circle of Influence" and the outer circle is your "Circle of Concern".
EVERYTHING in the world is grouped by this analogy.
- The things you can influence are in your circle of influence (and you are concerned about them as well, because anything you influence implies some degree of monitoring).
- The things that you can't influence, but are worried about are in your circle of concern, but outside your circle of influence.
- And everything else that you are not worried about (like what I had for breakfast) are outside all these circles. The rest of the world, as it were.
Like most things in life, these circles grow with effort and attention. The key is to keep most of that effort in your circle of influence. And it will grow. A "worry-wart" puts their effort in their circle of concern, and it grows.
Now the circle of influence (the inner one) can grow until it is the size of the circle of concern. But the concern circle can expand and expand and expand. This has two effects to you personally. 1 - You worry about more and more. 2 - What you can influence gets proportionately smaller. Not a healthy situation.
Stick to your circle of influence. Life is too short to worry overly much on trivial matters and when you do, you miss out on opportunities to be a blessing.
Hopefully, that answered your question.
And I can "defend" the alternate threads better if you would make a case a wee bit stronger than "I think it's a bad idea."
In fact, there is a handy "polling" option... why not make a poll? Who knows. Enough people MIGHT agree with you (I don't know, having never polled the populace myself) and the moderators might do something.
And you could sit back and smile the smile of satisfaction having accomplished..........
........what?

I'm thinking of starting a thread about how annoying it is when someone changes their posting name almost constantly...hmmm...of course we (Mr. W and I) only did that THREE times ourselves-Hey wait, does that qualify as one idiotic thing for us to join idiotville ...opinions?
Mrs. W
P.S. FWIW, Ark, I'd read and post on the "Ark is Great" thread(s)...
ETA: P.P.S. Ark, I thought of a name..."How Great Thou Ark"...catchy, huh?

does that qualify as one idiotic thing for us to join idiotville I think it is worth a try. I'd look the other way if you tried it. And after seeing this. I think it is absolutely imperative that you join Idiotville.

I see from your registration date you have been on the forum for just a few months. Yes, master I am grasshopper! There's another topic: the caste system divided amongst the just got here members and the been here a long time members. If I am here four years from now, do me a favor: either shoot me or throw me into one of the Idiotville threads. Your pick of which Idiotville. By then, there prolly will be fifty of them.
