This is not normally a good idea for at least some time. If you do get custody then the wife will almost assuredley take you back to court for change of custody due to material change (you moving away). If you are talking about being within one hour of one another then that is diffrent but is probably something you want to discuss with your attorney asap.

Differs by state. I can't even leave my county, much less my state.

My x wanted me to remain in county. I asked for in county or any adjacent county and he agreed. I would have to go to court to move beyond that.

A lot depends on the state. Mine recently ruled that the custodial parent was allowed to move except in cases where it would be determintal to the children. Above and beyond losing the relationship with the non-custodial parent. So I may get the green light to go - which I am hoping for.
Check out your states or countys rules they differ.
