OW,

Welcome to MB. What everyone has said here is incredibly valuable. And right on the mark.

I don't have a lot of time right now, but reading your story REALLY struck a chord with me. With the exception of my exH drinking himself to death, your story could have been mine. To the "T" - age, length of courtship, length of M, alcohol addiction and abuse, EA then PA with OM, desire to do the 'right thing'...

One thing we all find out here at MB is that no matter how 'unique' we think our own situation is, someone else has 'been there done that.' It's actually a good thing - takes away from the 'specialness' we feel, and it starts the process of realizing that this is the same story played over and over. Many have recovered, and so can you.

Couple of things I want to say, and then I'll try to come back tonight (if I can) to say more.....

IF you want to do the right thing....(and I truly believe you do), then:

1. Tell your H. This will be the most frightening thing you will have ever had to do. It was for me (you can click on my name, and look at my posts....I got to MB at exactly the point where you are). I was sooooo afraid. But I knew I had to do it. Nothing was going to change, unless I changed it.

So I picked a date, and practiced saying 4 words: "I had an AFFAIR" Who'dve thought that 4 words could be so difficult to say? But I knew that once those 4 words were said, then things would move by themselves.

I knew no matter whether the consequences were good or bad, I couldn't keep such a horrible secret any longer. And the only way I could give back any respect to my H was to let him know of what I did. He needed to see me - ALL of me (warts and all), and decide if he could love me for who I was.

2. Stop all contact with OM. This one was difficult. But anything and everything that you will ever read will tell you that in order to heal (your M OR yourself), you must never talk to OM again.

Now, completing step #1 will help you with step #2. (There's no way in HE-double-hockey-sticks that your H is going to allow this man to still be part of your life)

The other part of step #2 is making a conscious decision to not contact OM or respond to contact. This decision will go against every feeling you will have. And it will take a while for your feelings to catch up with your actions. But it does happen, and it is a MUST for any kind of recovery.

You see, your affair is a coping mechanism. Much like an addiction. And truthfully one of the things that helped me through the initial stages of understanding was to see my OM as a drug.

You and I are very much alike. We chose men with alcohol problems, during a time that was recreational for us. We should have seen the 'red flags', but perhaps because of our FOO, we either missed them, denied them, rationalized them, or were simply too codependent to acknowledge them.

So under the 'guise' of wanting to help them....and thinking they can change - they can be so much more....we became enablers. We gave and gave and gave, and never received....consequently, when opportunity presented itself, our TAKER went in full control.

Think about the 'feeling' part of your A. Your OM makes you 'feel' good. Being with him makes you 'feel' good. When you are without him, you 'feel' you need him. The thought of giving him up 'feels' impossible.

Do you ever wonder what a heroin addict 'feels' like? My guess is that it would be quite similar.

You had an A in order to 'cope' with your own problems much like an addict turns to drugs to 'cope' with their problems. It's an escape. It's a temporary fix. We know full well that the current arrangements could not last forever. Just like an addict needs more and more to get the same 'feeling', we feel like we need more and more of the OM to satisfy our 'feelings'.

For just one moment, play things out. Say you leave your H and your OM leaves his W. You are both 'addicted' to each other. It 'feels' good - but underneath it is toxic. What happens when you realize that all of your (and his) original problems are not 'fixed' by this new arrangement. Then what? You are left with the same 'feeling' of emptiness you had in your first M.

You would slowly be killing yourself.

So how do you beat the addiction? One day at a time. You make a conscious decision NOT TO FEED the addiction. You give it up cold turkey. And you realize that it's going to be HARD. But with each second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year you are successful, the 'need' for that drug will lessen. And soon, you won't feel like you 'need' it at all.

BUT if you give in....even just once....(noone can have just a little heroin again and be a recovered addict), you will put yourself back at step one.

So try step #1, and then move on to step #2.

And once you've done that, then you can begin healing. And trust me from someone who was in your EXACT place in June 3 years ago....Being healthy feels A LOT better

You can do it....good luck!

please join us

there is no joy that awaits you in an affair

just more

shame
stress
and a gradual unraveling of your soul

please do not sign up for "more of the same" in your marriage

my H is also an alcoholic
he had the affair , not I

we are living proof that there can be a new way of living after alcoholism & a nasty affair

all affairs are nasty

if affairs were not nasty
infidelity would be celebrated with a ceremony with invited friends & good food would be served

and

Hallmark would have cards for it

~Congratulations~ on your successful adultery

*snort*

come in and stay

we can talk with you when you get anxious

I can't help it....the resemblence is uncanny

Quote
I am 32 yo
I'm 31 yo

Quote
and have been married to my husband for 5 years
I was married to mine for 5 years

Quote
We have been together for a total of 10 years

Yup, we were, too

Quote
the first 5 of which we were dating / living together / etc.
This is getting scary....

Quote
my H is an alcoholic and probably has been since before we even met. This all seemed OK with me when we first met, I was in a phase where going out and drinking was fun and exciting.

Yeah, college kind of perpetuated that 'fun and exciting' drinking phase for me. Thought it was that way for exH also....but turns out he used alcohol to self medicate

Quote
As I understand most families of alcoholics do, I very quickly became an enabler and co-dependant.
Both my parents are alcoholics and have been for years. I had been codependent (until now) since I was a mere child. I had always had a 'best friend' since I was 7 yo. Sad

Quote
a role that I felt required me to 100% support our lifestyle and marriage

My exH supported the lifestyle as well...but I felt I had to support the M. Now I know that it was not all my burden to carry. Now we both know that.

Quote
I realized that I wasn't happy in my job, so I changed jobs and ended up with my dream career.

Me, too. Went from being a social worker, to getting my masters degree and working clinically in the medical field.

Quote
I stopped complaining to my husband and tried to be happy, no matter if it was or was not real.

Yup, another one. But this is not healthy. It's supressing. It's denial. It's falsifying. It builds resentment. It's toxic.

Quote
I met someone at work, my OM

Exactly how I met mine.

Quote
My OM is married also, in a troubled marriage.
Um hmm. Mine was, too.

Quote
At first, the A was an EA. This lasted about 3 months

I swear to god, I feel like I'm reading my own story....

Quote
After a few business trips, it because a PA.

Mine was on our second business trip together (there's no 'disgusted' graemlin for me to paste here...)

Quote
we held hands, caressed and shared and told each other that we loved one other.....says that my husband will never love me the way that he does
Sad...all this does is bring back really revolting feelings of how convoluted my thinking was. How selfish I was.

Quote
My H returns tomorrow and I know that I owe him the opportunity to be a better man, the man that I asked for. He is trying and I haven't been lately.

I gave up 2 weeks before my A.

Quote
I still love him but haven't felt passion or romantic love for him in over a year
And you won't feel that romantic love for him until you give up the OM and focus on your M.

And if you have any doubt about the alternative...look at my sig line. While I didn't go with OM, my H and I ended up D'ed. You think giving up the OM (who you've only been with for a few months) is difficult. Try giving up your 10 year companion....love....husband.

Let me just say that the A is no longer the most difficult thing I have ever done.

Quote
I spent all day yesterday and today trying to decide what to do, where to go, how to take action, what is right, who is right for me and I realized that I just can't make this decision.
You can and you will have to make a decision. If not, one will be made for you (this sounds eerily like being arrested).

You don't make the decision on 'who' is right for you. Right now you are not healthy. If you are involved in an affair, you ARE NOT HEALTHY. If you are NOT HEALTHY, then you can't have a healthy relationship. Do not worry right now about 'who' is right for you.

Instead, you need to worry about 'what' is right for you...and also your H. Posting on this board is an excellent start. Counseling would probably be a good option as well.

Quote
it seems like my feelings are common and typical although I truly feel like i've met someone very special...

So did I...until I came here and read. I was then 99.9% certain that my situation was 'textbook'.

Now reading your post, I'm 250% sure my situation was 'textbook'. Apparently so is yours

Please come back and post. It's hard. I know.

Hi,
Yesterday was tough - i've never had such a day. Today, I feel a bit stronger but not much. I am torn but am trying my best to stand up and be a strong person about all of this and do what's the right thing to do. More later. Thank you for all of your words.

It is impossible to have no contact with the OM (we work together and neither of us is able to change jobs). But, the good thing is that we're both on the same page now and have agreed that things have to end, completely so that makes me feel better.

My H comes home tonight, and I'll do my best.. it is what it is.

"Over and Out"

Hey, even in the fog, you got humor. Thank you for not saying, "LA! Ahuman! Go to your rooms."

(Ahuman...you cracked me up 'til I cried yesterday. I roared...showed my DH...what a marvelous tension breaker inside me...let's do this more often!)

Prayers with be with you being honest with your BH tonight, OW123...

LA
