My post was meant to be positive. Obviously it didn't read that way.
I meant that we are fortunate to live in free societies where freedom of speech and belief is a given. I meant that we need have no fear of being tracked down for opposing views.
The giving and taking of information was going fine till it became an "I don't agree with you so you must be an idiot" fest.
FH, no one of course can MAKE you believe anything and I probably worded that wrong. I meant you are fortunate you don't live somewhere you have to go underground with your beliefs.
I don't know, I've been thinking a lot about how free we all are lately, probably because of discussions at work, and we need to all fight to keep from ever being oppressed or being afraid to speak, as some other countries are.

Hi Jen - the 1st Amendment issue in the US should seem to be straightforward. Sadly, it's not. There are subtle and not-so-subtle agendas at play that make this a point of contention. Hints of this are apparent in the other thread.
If you're interested, I'll provide a more indepth dissertation on the history of the constitutional and legal decisions that are involved. For homework, read the 14th Amendment.

jelly - congrats on making me laugh the best all day.
Ya know, that does sound REAL nerdy.
Guilty as charged!
Actually, I'd bet you wouldn't consider me a nerd in real life. Just a bet. Can't prove it otherwise.

LOL, and I was sitting here thinking, hmmm, that sounds interesting.
That makes me a nerd as well. But Jelly already knows that and reminds me of it constantly.
To tell you the truth WAT, it's not something we learn at school here (or not when I was at school anyway back in the dark ages) so I know very little about it, but we DO teach American Politics here at the university.

The giving and taking of information was going fine till it became an "I don't agree with you so you must be an idiot" fest. Well, that is the nice thing about being a free person in a free society, free speech cuts both ways, not just one way. Anyone has the freedom here to disagree and even call the other an idiot if they choose. And congress is not allowed to impede that right.

And congress is not allowed to impede that right. Hence, one of the subtleties. WAT

Yes, of course it goes both ways.
I'm not trying to be smart about this. Something triggered this off in me the other day and I just feel so fortunate to be part of the free world.
I don't know anything about congress or what they are and aren't allowed to do. I'm just so grateful to be free.

Right now I'm wearing a tropical shirt, dockers, boat shoes, no socks. No pocket protector. Wouldn't a real nerd at least have some nerd implements? - like a slide rule clipped to his/her belt?
