Driving through a small village we need directions. H is driving the car I am passenger.
There are two options. 1. a man on his own on the foothpath right beside my open window. 2. 2 girls walking along on the foothpath on the other side of the road.
H stops & asks the 2 girls, with bigs smiles.
Is that instinctive? Is it the best option for a 'foremerly vunerable' man?
Your thoughts.....

It could be instinctive if the two girls seemed more "friendly" or less intimidating than the man.
I don't think I would read much into it.
If you want directions it's best to be friendly when asking for them, (smiles) and you need to get them from someone you feel is approachable.

I might go for the 2 girls myself, if I were in the driver's seat. But I don't know your story, or that of your H's, dear Ktulu: how is your H's behavior at this point?

A man asking ANYBODY for directions is suspicious. A real man would have continued on driving never admitting he was lost.

Many women would say that is being redundant.
