Imagine a beautiful blue ocean. You’re underwater; it’s warm and inviting; you see brightly colored fish swim by. There are treasures beyond belief there. There’s even a cozy little castle. No responsibilities, no whining, screaming kids; but best of all there’s a beautiful mermaid swimming with you. She has long flowing blond tresses and big, beautiful, adoring eyes and a wide smile...just for you. You feel overwhelmed with happiness and joy. You notice the decaying bodies of some men on the fringes of your Eden, but choose to ignore them. Ahhhh, life is good!
Wait!! Out of the corner of your eye, you spot sharks circling the area! Oh no, how will you save the beautiful mermaid? You feel something tugging at your ankle...oh, it’s the mermaid (sigh of relief). You smile down at her and notice the tiniest of shark fins peaking out from her gorgeous hair. She’s got a firm grip now and is pulling...hard! You kick to break the surface of the water; your lungs are bursting.
You reach the surface and gasp for breath. Above, in a boat, you see a woman (somewhat pretty, but not as breathtaking as the mermaid); she is extending a rope (lifeline) to you. There’s a look of determination and concern on her face; she’s not smiling. Behind her are four children also holding onto the rope. In the background, you notice land...ordinary land... with all it’s flaws and imperfections, disappointments, but the opportunity to truly live is there waiting for you to make of it what you choose. The mermaid is beckoning to you, beseeching you with her eyes.
The rest of the story is yours to decide. You are in over your head and I’m your lifeline...just reach out and take it...if you want. You won’t be safe until you’re out of the water completely. The sharks represent your depression, guilt, and other symptoms.
