Hello all, my husband and I have been married for almost 2 years, and we have a beautiful six month old baby boy. We have our ups and downs but overall we're both pretty happy in our relationship. The problem that I'm faced with is this; because of both of our work schedules and the fact that we're both in the military we have agreed not to have more children - this was a joint decision. Unfortunately oral contraceptives are not an option for us, my body refuses to act right when I take them. We have been using condoms for a temporary 'fix' since our son was born but this has become a kind of hinderance to our sex life. So now my husband has decided that he wants to have a vasectomy. I am supportive of him, but I'm worried that he will feel differently afterwards or even regret having the procedure done. I'm also concerned that he may be saying that he is going to have a vasectomy in order to try to pressure me into having a tubal done because he says things like 'well one of us has to do something' and also he also told his parents; in which they think I should have the sterilization done because I'm the one they feel will 'benefit' my career more and I understand that, but he's also their son and I love them but they're always going to want to put their son first and I can understand that too, but I'm not sure if my husband does. Honestly, I don't know whether I would go through with the tubal procedure or not because I haven't researched it enough. I don't want to tell my husband I feel this way because it would make me feel like I was pressuring him to have the surgery and I don't want to do that. I'm in a sticky situation and any help you can give me if anyone has gone through something like this would be greatly appriciated. Thanks for listening.

Here's my 5 cents:

First...keep your in-laws out of this. It's not their business & they are probably old school which means they think that all the modifications must be done to the woman's body. There is also an obvious bias there: They don't want their son to be surgically "altered." But, it's OK for you.

Second...Sterilization for women is not reversible and is an expensive complex proceedure with far more risks than a vasectomy which is a 20-25 minute outpatient procedure which IS simple, relatively painless, and reversible to boot.

Check this out:
"A vasectomy, performed in minutes with a local anesthetic, is faster, easier, less expensive and poses much less risk for complications to men than does a tubal ligation for women, which must be performed under general anesthesia, requires a longer recovery period and is more expensive." source: http://www.vasectomy.com/ArticleDetail.asp?ArticleId=9

Good luck worthenks!
