Sort of a weird post, but ever since this whole A ordeal, I've been losing my hair.

Went to the Dr. and he said it is stress related. Was told to eat healthier, take B vitamins etc.

I can definitely see a difference in my hair. It is much thinner.

Has this happened to anyone? And what did you do?

catgirl, are you on AD's? I read somewhere that some AD's cause hair loss. I lost some of my eyelashes.

Yeah that's not an option for me. Don't imagine I'd look too good bald.

But the way I'm going, it might not be too far fetched.

I lost my hair. I also pulled at it during all the crap which helped it call out more!

It was a stress thing for me and I still do it now when I am really stressed.

Hang in there. It gets better.

My H has been taking rogaine and propecia since he was in his 20's to keep his hair. Now, he's 44 and dating a 20 year old. Hmmm...maybe losing your hair isn't such a bad thing afterall.

Seriously, though. Get your thyroid tested. It's a quick and easy blood test. I'm surprised the doc didn't recommend that one. Good luck!

Catgirl-

Sheesh that's awful, especially for a woman.

Can you use any of the rogaine type stuff, or wouldn't that work because it's stress related?

I lose a lot of hair, but I always have, I went to the Doctor about it and he laughed and said "Honey you lose 100 hairs a day, you are just noticing because your hair is so long"

I wish I knew what to tell you.

God Bless,

-Caren

I echo FF... are you on any medication?

I had a student who was on ADs and her hair started falling out. She was nine...

I think it's pretty rare, but possible.

I'm sorry for all your pain...

You can try MSM. It is a very safe supplement and seems to keep my hair from falling out...as fast...

Yes, I am on AD's. I didn't know they made your hair fall out. It does correlate though to the time I started them and the time my hair started coming out. I will ask my Dr. about this. Thanks!

I really didn't look into Rogaine. As you said, I'm not sure it would work due to it being stress related.

I knew you lost 100 hairs a day, and I've always had hair loss during brushing etc., but this is worse.

Is the supplemant called MSM? I will look into that. Thanks!

Catgirl,

Yes I did lose my hair too. I wasn't on ADs at the time. I know it was stress related, when I got the "real story" of the A, I was literally traumatized for weeks. That was over 3 years ago, and I am glad to report it DID grow back! My hair is usually just past my shoulders, I got it cut shorter to give it all a chance to grow back and after several months it was back to normal.

I just told my hairdresser I'd been under a lot of stress...

Well, you are a Catgirl (that's what I call my kitty), maybe just loosing your winter coat? Sorry, I could not resist. I'd be freaked too, I'd run for the Ladies Rogain myself. If it's stress, it should be temporary (let's hope), and the Rogain might help in the mean time.

Have you had your hormones checked, too? A friend with very thin hair had low levels of Estrogen, and it started growing again with hormone supplements. Especially if you are anywhere near menopause.

Just a thought - Dru

Too funny, Dru!

Thanks!

I will ask my GYN. I think I'm in what they call perimenopause. I'm mid 40's.

Hair loss and dry skin

Approximately one-third of menopausal women report noticeable hair loss (called “alopecia”) or change in hair growth during the change of life. This can be very unsettling!

Thinning hair or hair loss in women at this age is often due to a drop in estrogen in comparison to testosterone, which may not decrease at the same rate. The result is a net excess of testosterone, contributing to hair loss on the head and hair growth in unwanted areas.

The good news is that menopausal hair loss due to falling estrogen levels is usually temporary and improves gradually. However, other causes of hair loss, such as elevated stress hormones and many other systemic imbalances, are not so transient, so they are important to address.

After getting some insider tips on hair loss, are you following up on your Dr.'s advice to look after a healthy diet?
I didn't suffer any obviouse hair loss (although I am male), but I think I look at least 5 years older than I did 2 years ago. Encouraging each other to keep up good feeding habits might be a valid topic of discussion here, too. I'm sure that in this turmoil a lot of us neglect this part of maintaining one's sanity.

Same happened to me! I have hair below my shoulders and I've always noticed lots of hair loss, but attributed it to the length. DDay1 was in October of last year and I think I noticed a change the next day! It was as if twice the amount were falling out overnight! Definitely stress related! Seemed to subside when I came to grips with myself, about 2-3 weeks later. Started AD's in December and starting noticing it again! Spoke to doc and he said it was a temporary thing and he was right. Probably 2 months of sporradic hair loss and all seems a bit better now.

My GYN says I'm not perimenopausal yet but I'm not so sure. I have night sweats and mood swings, the skin & hair issues, but they all go along with hormones, AD's and stress so it's hard to really to pinpoint the exact cause. It's most likely all of the above.

I've heard that Shen Min helps. It's a vitamin mix.

Catgirl,

I have lost my hair due to stress several times over the years. First time was after my second son was born, that was related to poor diet and thyroid (wasn't on thyroid meds though). But I have lost hair just due to stress a couple of time. I wasn't on AD's at the time, I am now. It grows back after a few months, although I do have one bald spot due to the first time.

Something else strange happened to my hair due the stress of WH's A, it became curly! I had stick straight fine hair all my life before, I couldn't even wear barretts as a young girl, they would slide off. My hair gradually became wavey after D-day #1 and now I have curls. My hairdresser said it was due to stress which may have affected a hormonal change, but that she has only seen curly hair go straight, not the other way around. Now I have to actually staighten my hair with a curling iron. It is very weird and surreal sometimes to look at it. It is still fine though.
