for me ...
the MOST amazing person in the movie is Dave Karnes ... an x-marine ... who was working in business (in a different state) he put on his marine uniform, got a marine haircut , and drove to the rubble ... he disobeyed the police order to stop searching the rubble because it was too dark, too hot, too dangerous ... he (and another marine) are the 2 who found the 2 burried police officers ... I had to wipe my eyes when he said "We're the marines. We don't leave people behind."

Pep, slightly OT but I got an e-mail from DD today, very worried, as they'll be making the trans Atlantic flight from London to SF in about 2 months.
I REALLY wish she was home safe and sound now but I'm not going to panic.

The TransAm mafia?

Hi Pep-
Living within walking distance to the Pentagon (we think the plane went right over our house - LOW!), this clearly has particular relevance with me.
With the events of yesterday (8/10) and the anniversary a month from today, it's good to remind ourselves of the frightening prevalence of those who claim to know God's views.

the problem i have with going to see this movie is that people are making money by telling this story. so many people lost so much, how can i contribute to the profit of this movie.
i never saw the titanic for the very same reason. especially since they wrapped the pretty love story around it (that was all fiction, right?)
any one else feel this way?

Since d-day, over 2 years ago, the depth of the movies I now will see are along the lines of "Ricky Bobby!" Can't handle anything much deeper or sadder than that!

Saving Private Ryan was on the lobotomy box last night.
Deep serious stuff, but fiction. I think the effectiveness of movies is very much a function of the effort and creativity of the producer. Spielberg did that one. He also did War of the Worlds last year. Wish he hadn't. I bet if H G Wells had produced that movie, it'd have been memorable.

2long, I always understood that Saving Private Ryan was based on fact.
FL, I struggle too with the commercialisation of something that means so much to so many people but if it keeps the memory of the people alive and our resolve to fight terrorism alive, it can only be a good thing.
My DD visited Dachau last week. It was disturbing and upsetting for her but it's so important for this generation, as well, to never forget.

I have been mulling something over for the last few days since the premiere of the movie.
I will not go see that movie. I cannot go see that movie. The movie would take me back in time to a place that I have no desire to revisit.
I find odd because I am able to easily go back in time and revisit my own personal 9/11, d-day (6 years ago). I can recall details and the strong negative emotions without triggering. I can remember feeling the pain, fear and the groundless of that event without feeling it NOW.
I cannot do that with the real 9/11. I avoided the Flight 93 movies because the emotions are still with me...five years later. Even the TV commercials for these movies put me off.
I can`t quite figure this out.

Dday seems more of a blur than 9/11. I don't get emotional thinking of Dday now.
I can't seem to compare the two. They both affected me so deeply but differently. I'm not very good at analysing my feelings.

this is very difficult for me....my brother should have been on the pennsylvania plane..he is a flight attendant. i had friends and family there...they all survived thank god. and this was in a weird way part of a catalyst for hubby's affair. emotionally i think it had a big part in him just going for it so to speak. im not sure if i'll be able to watch the movie....all of it and the affair are so interconected for me.
what we do in life......echoes in eternity!

I don`t feel the A related feelings, I can watch movies with A`s in them now with sang froid much in the same way as I did pre d-day, I am better able to pick out faulty BS/WS logic but other then that watching A related movies doesn`t bother me anymore.
But 9/11 movies/documentaries set me off. I feel that same clenching of the jaw and turning of my stomach that I did as I watched it all unfold that day like it`s happening all over again. Perhaps with a bit less intensity but it`s still there. And it`s not like I never think of it...a day doesn`t go by that I don`t hear some reference to 9/11.
Perhaps it`s because that I dwelled on the A until I got sick of it that I have gotten over it. I really try not to think about 9/11 whenever possible. Maybe seeing the movie might not be such a bad idea afterall..

I have friends where the Pennsylvania plane hit too. As a matter of fact I met them doing genealogy research several years ago, it turns out that my family owned a farm over 200 years ago right where the plane went down. I have been to Washington many times and seen the Pentagon, I have been to the World Trade Center. All of these places are a reality for me as opposed to the areas of the world where the tsunami hit.
The tsunami was horrible but it did not affect me the way 9/11 did. The only thing comparable for me would be d-day.
