I slipped and fell getting out of the shower this am. Hit my side full against the rim of the tub.

Went 2 work. Left rib way sore. Hurts 2 cough or even burp. Didn't feel or hear a 'crack'. Am okay in most sitting or standing positions, but laying down - especially 2rning over is a PAIN.

I've never broken anything in my life, but now I wonder.

You could have broken a rib or separated one - sort of popped the boney portion away from the cartiledge. I did that once - coughing.

It could be a hairline fracture, and you would not have heard it crack. Even a complete separation, and you would not have necessarily heard anything.

If you're sensible, you will seek medical assistance, as it is a small step from fractured rib to punctured lung.

If you're not sensible, you will at least wrap your ribs to reduce their movement.

I really recommend being sensible. Hope you feel better. Maybe we should all chip in and buy you some non-stick floor pads.

Have broken mine, and cracked them. (not at the same time)

Cracked hurt worse for me, but I think I tore other things loose when I did it.

I recommend you don't do any of the following:

Bull riding
Sky diving
Motorccle racing (motocross)
weight lifting
water skiiing
pole vault

Chess is OK if you don't get too excited.

My H broke his ribs at my father's funeral. Don't ask, not a pretty story.

They don't bind broken ribs any more and he had bronchitis as well. Ouch.

You do need to get it checked out though, especially if you're having difficulty breathing. A punctured lung wouldn't be fun.

LOL SS, chances......?

2long - it is possible that you broke a rib, but it's more likely that you have "pulled" an intercostal muscles or muscles. The same effect can be felt from bleeding (i.e. bruising).

The definitive choice would be an x-ray to "rule out" a fracture. If you want the "crude but often very effective way" to check for yourself, it's called "point tenderness." Walk your finger down the rib itself, putting pressure on the rib. If you come to a fracture, you will feel a sharp, pretty much localized, pain at that point. Lacking that, the most likely culprit is bruising of the tissues and muscles.

There is little likelihood of surgery to fix a broken rib, so take some painkillers and perhaps get a "rib belt" from your local pharmacy to support the damaged area until it heals naturally.

Bruising of the rib area will cause a lot of pain on movement, especially rapid forceful movement such as in coughing. But you'll feel tightness and pain anyway as the ribs are made to move as you inhale and exhale. "It's a pain," if you'll pardon the pun, but it's not fatal.

Here's hoping you are quick healer.

God bless.

About 6 months ago I saw a woman who fell against her tub and came to see me the next morning still reeking of alcohol ... and she had 8 rib fractures!

Moral of the story: don't drink & bathe

I have cracked a rib before. I didn't hear a thing, I was too busy trying to keep from falling. You can crack a rib and then it hurts when you move in certain positions, especially like pushing to get out of a chair, or trying to roll over out bed.

Patient: Doc, it hurts when I do this…

Doc: Well, don’t do this…

Let’s see, the don’t do list is at:

Bull riding
Sky diving
Motorcycle racing (motocross)
weight lifting
water skiing
pole vault

no curling
no stein lifting
no river dancing
no clogging or flogging
no food fights with any thing bigger than finger foods...

no laughing
snorting
giggling
or burping...

We need to add, No:

SF
Flights to Mars
Spelunking
Break dancing
Moshing
Home repair

Hmm, I wonder. Maybe the first addition there is what really caused this in the first place...
