I have been on the Atkins diet for 7 years now and it made a huge change in my energy level, body fat and health profile. I lost 50 pounds. I absolutely love this diet.
Basically, you eliminate the junk food in exchange for low glycemic vegetables, fruits, nuts. I never eat any refined sugar, flour, white potatoes, white rice or processed foods. [except my occasional cheats on onion rings <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />]
Just eliminating sugar from my diet made a huge difference in my energy level and mental outlook. Refined sugar bogs down energy and creates brain fog. You don't realize how bad it is until you stop and then have some again. The difference is shocking. I ate some recently and felt groggy and fogged out for 24 hours. I don't know how I ever managed in the old days when I used eat it every day.
After I lost my weight, which happened fairly quickly, I graduated to the maintenance phase and have been there for these past 7 years. It is a real easy diet to stick with once you get the hang of it. At first, it was hard figuring out what to eat when you are used to eating garbage [garbage is so readily available] but once I learned to shop right it became second nature.

I'm on the Montignac diet right now - that's pretty close to Atkins and I should lose some 50-60 pounds too.. 10 down, 40 to go..

Montignac tells you to eat carbs & fat & fruit separately. You can have carbs.. but then no fat. Whole grain bread is ok.. but no butter, no cheese, no meat to go with it. Meat, cheese is ok .. but no bread, rice, pasta to go with it (=carbs). Lots of veggies and fruit.. No coffee and sugar.
This really helps me cut back on the carbs, which I consumed a lot doing comfort eating.. And cutting the sugar went really well. Like you said: you can't even imagine ever having eaten such sweetened things before when you've "detoxed" !
Also.. I'm sponsoring myself. For every kilo I lose (that's a little over 2 pounds) I deposit a certain amount on my savings' account. To be spend on gorgeous clothes when I reach "my target". <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Wow, except for the timing issues, that sounds just like Atkins! Did you find that you don't miss sugar at all when you never have it? I thought I would die the first week but after that, I never missed it.
I have found I have to stay away from fruit. That is an entirely personal issue, though, because fruit is allowed on Atkins. Because of my previous blood sugar problems, fruit sets off sweet cravings. Especially strawberries. I stay away from the high sugar, junkier fruits anyway, because they give me thundering low blood sugar headaches.
I sure do feel better eating like this, don't you?

Yep.. I absolutely feel better! I need less sleep.. I don't feel bloated... And the weight loss is starting to show. I'm having a hard time with most other things right now and I'm glad I can feel good about myself doing the right thing for ME. Not just losing weight, but also eating healthy and going for a walk etc. instead of swallowing sweet stuff... My dog likes this alternative too as she gets to go on those walks with me <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Mel - east texas boy here (city of roses..). But transplanted to the "left coast" as you say.
I am curious about your diet. I am not a dieter. (I could do without ten or fifteen pounds, though) I eat well for the most part, BUT - I consume probably 15 teaspoons of sugar in iced tea a day (told you i was from TEXAS), and a couple of cokes a day. ( I drink my tea in those 64 oz cups you get at wal-mart....)(but it is spiced tea - chai, orange, cinnamon, and lipton's cut black)
How in the helll am I gonna get my tea sweetened if I kick sugar?

Mel, I know what you’re talking about here… A few years ago I was on a “detox” diet for 3 months and during this time I didn’t consume any sugars at all. After the 3 months was over, I ate a big ice-cream with a sugar cone one afternoon. After just a few minutes I started to feel terrible and also developed a headache. I felt very tired and foggy that whole afternoon and even the next morning I didn’t felt “myself” yet. It was terrible and the realization through this experience on how bad sugar actually is for the body was shocking to me too! Generally I don’t like too much sugar and don’t consume much of it, but unfortunately I have a huge weakness for chocolate – especially the dark, bitter one (Albony). This one contains less sugar than normal milk chocolate, but it still contains sugar and if I don’t put a hold onto myself I will easily consume 3 slabs (or more <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />) a week! Because of my chocolate “addiction”, I’ve decided to not eat or buy any chocolates for at least one month. I’m already in my 2nd week of no chocolates. The craving for chocolates was very bad last week but it’s much better already, but I don't if I’m prepared to live my whole life without any chocolates - I don't think so! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Just wanted to share this with you. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Suzet, exactly what you described happened to me in July of 99' after being sugar free for a few months. I treated myself to a piece of carrot cake 6 months after having no sugar, and felt so bad that I spent the rest of the evening in bed with a pounding headache. It then occured to me that I used to feel that way, or close to it, ALL THE TIME! YUCK! That is a great motivator to give up sugar!
I also love chocolate, but we have great sugar free chocolates here that fill that need. I also make sugar free cheese cakes that are to die for!

Mel, we also have sugar free chocolates here, but it's so expensive, I don't even look at it!
A few months ago I've started to replace the sugar in me and my H's tea/coffee (we don't like it bitter) with fructose (fruit sugar) in stead. As far as I understand, fructose is a healthy alternative for sucrose (normal sugar) although too much of it must not be consumed either... I was using sweeteners for a long time but then I heard/read that sweeteners contain ingredients which are unhealthy for the body... I still don't know if this is really true or not... What do you use in your coffee/drinks or do you drink it bitter? Do you sometimes use fructose (fruit sugar) or don't you take any type of sugar at all. Does your diet allow you to eat fruit?

Suzet, I avoid fructose, too, because the body has the same insulin reaction to fructose that it does refined sugar. I prefer Splenda over any other artificial sweeteners because it passes through the body without effecting the blood sugar. It seems to be the safest in trials.
My diet does allow fruit, but only those that are lower on the glycemic scale, such as strawberries and the rest of the berry group. I have to greatly limit fruit, though, because it just trashes my blood sugar and starts me back into sugar cravings. So, while it is allowable, it is an individual thing.
Can you get liquid Splenda in your country? We only have powdered Splenda here, which isn't nearly as good the liquid they sell in Europe.

ok, here are my sugar free cheesecake recipes. They are really easy to make and taste wonderful:
Recipe Name: Beachgirl's Mocha Marble Cheesecake
Ingredients: 32 ounces cream cheese 1 cup Splenda 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract 2 tablespoons instant coffee -- dissolve in water 2 tablespoons water 4 eggs plus 1 egg yolk 3 tablespoons sour cream 3 semisweet chocolate squares -- melted
How to Prepare: Bring all cold ingredients to room temperature. With an electric mixer, combine the cream cheese and sugar at slow to medium speed, scraping sides often. Add all other ingredients except eggs, chocolate and coffee . When completely mixed (with no lumps), add the eggs and egg yolk, one at a time, beating very slowly. When eggs are incorporated separate out one cup of batter then add the coffee into the rest of the batter. When coffee is blended in, donât mix any more. Over-mixing the batter is a contributing cause of cracked cheesecakes. (The leading cause of cracking is over-cooking, so donât believe any one who tells you it is normal for a cheesecake to be cracked; it isnât.) Always treat the batter gently.
To the one cup of separated batter, add the three squares of melted chocolate and blend.
Add half of the coffee batter to a well-greased springform pan. Add spoonfuls of the chocolate batter, and then cover with remaining coffee batter. Swirl through with spatula to create marbling effect. Place the pan on a very large piece of aluminum foil, and fold the foil up around the pan to create a watertight barrier around the cheesecake. Then place the springform pan in an even larger pan and fill the larger pan halfway with water. This is called a water bath. It is a gentler way to cook the cheesecake. Place the entire water bath containing the cheesecake in a 300-degree preheated oven.

It sounds delicious and I’m definitely going to try it out! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I’ve never heard of Splenda, but I will look around in the shops and find out where I can get it. Hopefully both the powder and liquid will be available in my country.
