This really interests me. Apparently you can tell where anyone in the English speaking world is from by the pronunciation of the following. They have my pronunciations next to them.

I pronounce them as follows:

cot = cot
caught = cawt
cart = caht
bomb = bomb
balm = bahm
oil = oyl
house = hows
horse - hoarse
good = guhd
water = war-tah

Oh, it might help if you put where you are from. Otherwise the survey might not work.

But if I tell you where I'm from what's the point in trying to figure it out????

Oh well, if you want to cheat...Detroit, Michigan...Midwestern, USA.

I'm from the Midwest too and use the same pronunciations. I've added in a lot of stuff to my original "language" due to living in other places. In the US, you can also take a pretty good guess about where someone is from by which words they use.

War-tah didn't make sense until I added the accent, Jen.

Mrs. W's results...

cot = cot
caught = cawt
cart = cart
bomb = bahm
balm = balm
oil = oyl
house = howsss
horse - horsss
good = guuud
water = wah-tur

***Linguistic Profile for type of American English Spoken***

50% General American English

30% Dixie

10% Yankee

5% Upper Midwestern

0% Midwestern

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia...Living in Detroit, Michigan for 10 years...I have kind of a blended "mutt" accent now...Not enough drawl for the Southerners and not enough nasal twang for the YANKEES!

I dunno Marsh...Kiwi is from New Zealand, that test that you provided a link to is to determine what type of American English that you speak...I'm guessin' Jen doesn't speak "American English", unless she is makin' fun of us!

Maybe the test would show what regions the Americans who Jen hangs out with are from.

Jen,

2long pronounces New Orleans as N'awlins, or perhaps it was Gn'arlins without the G...whatever it was I don't recall but it's all the same anyway, as it is wrong.

Should be pronounced as New Orleans with clear and concise word/sylable anunciation.

And Mrs W., just so you know, not everyone in MI has a yankee twang, just the trolls below the bridge (and no, not troll as in person coming to MB to make trouble, the real kind of trolls).

cot = cot
caught = cot
cart = cart
bomb = bom
balm = bom
oil = oyl
house = howsz
horse - hors
good = gud
water = watur

1/2 South Texan, little Atlanta, 1/2 Northern Californian

New Orleans is definitely N'awlins!

Your Linguistic Profile:
65% General American English
25% Upper Midwestern
5% Midwestern
0% Dixie
0% Yankee

This PROVES I am NOT a YANKEE. I just happen to live in a state that was on the WINNERS side. In fact, Mrs. W is 10% more Yankee than I.

ML...put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I still submit General Sherman was a great General. Even if you don't agree you must concede the man sure could build a fire.

Thanks everyone for participating. I had never even CONSIDERED that bomb could be pronounced bahm or that oil could be pronounced ahhl.

I did do the American profile a while ago and I came out with an upper midwestern accent. I mentioned that (on the phone) to my friend Jelly from Michigan and when she'd stopped laughing she said "not even close."
