UNBELIEVABLE MATH PUZZLE
Here is a math trick so unbelievable that it will stump you...

1. Grab a calculator (you won't be able to do this one in your head)
2.Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 80
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again
8. Subtract 250
9. Divide number by 2
Do you recognize the answer?

It’s a dirty rotten trick.

(((abc*80) + 1)*250 + 2*defg – 250)/2

Reduces in all cases to 10000*abc + defg

So, if abc is a prefix and defg is any four (max) digit number, one gets PrefixNumber.

It's easy to create a version that puts the area code in too, though.

Now, a formula that generates OP's number out of thin air would really be useful…

This is also a nice one..
Unless you're fast with numbers and figure it out <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
The instruction are in German, so I'll give them to you in English:
pick any two-number digit
add the two digits (e.g. 35 = 3 + 5 = 8)
Substract this number from your original number (35 - 8 = 27)
Look for this number (27 in the example) on the screen and concentrate on the symbol next to it.
Then click on the magic ball and lo and behold !!

I watch with envy as you geeks talk about calculators with red numbers, etc. I might have been good in math - but I think I was not given a chance to learn it well. Seems evey time I was about to really catch on, a bell would ring, we would be jerked out of our math trans, and we would be forced to go diagram sentences. Yuck.

Aph - I watched a video with my son last night, and learned more about geometry than in all my years of school. It was a Disney movie from the 60s, about math. It is called Donald in Mathmagic Land. It discusses the pentagram, Pythagoreans, and the golden rectange. I had NEVER EVER heard of the golden rectangle, or golden triangles. I was never taught about the pentagram, and how it's dimensions are so important. I was never taught about the golden rectangle in art class.

I was blown away at the simplicity with which it was presented to my 8 year old in a Disney film!!

Crazy what some of us do not learn in skool.

All that math sure would come in handy right now with my ideas about directed engergy, and inertial propulsion. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

It's kind'a neat. You will always end up with a number divisible by 9 and all of those numbers have the same symbol.

Cool.

No habla German.

I have seen one like this and if it is the same one there is a trick.

All of the numbers it could possibly be have the same symbol.

Each time you try it though the symbol changes so it appears as though it is always different.

So for instance if the only possible answers are 9,18,27 etc those numbers will all have the same symbol.

Oh S C said that.

OK I am not a geek I got it in an email LOL

Got it to work. Needed to allow javascript.

SnC has it correct.

Related to casting out nines, and a variation works for big numbers too. Before computers got reasonably powerful it was a common algorithmic trick for speeding up division.

Fun. (Yes’m, I am a geek.)
