The island of Hawaii (aka: Big Island) received a 6.6 earthquake this morning. Followed by a 5.8 then I believe a 4.3 quaker plus almost 2 dozen aftershocks. That was at about 7:08am and it is now about 3:40 pm.
At this time, all islands (Oahu, Kauai, Lani) were shaken but with minimal damage. Big Island and Maui sustained the most damage with the Big Island receiving the bulk of the damage. No fatalities known at this time, and no major injuries reported. Hospitals in the Kona and Kohala areas have been transporting patients as needed. Power has been restored to most islands and most parts expect for Oahu. Oahu's power grid was taken down as part of the emergency action but it takes a long time to come up. We just received our power in our neighborhood so most of the island should be up by tonight.
The rain is keeping the humidity high. I took some of the meat out of the freezer so we are BBQing tonight. Cooked my rice, getting the potato/mac salad ready and just finished the chicken (yea Costco) and steaks. It's not real bad right now.
For a while we put some water in the tub in case we lost water supply but that was never interrupted. Guess it's best it happened this morning than tomorrow.
Too bad....schools w/b open tomorrow. LOL!!!
Of course we gotta brace for more action but the constant aftershocks c/b relieving the pressure. Though this quake felt different than the 1989 quake in CA. The '89 quake was closer to the top and this one felt real deep rumble.
Hawaii isn't as prepared as it should be. Only 2 local radio stations were broadcasting. One station did a great job and the state emergency broadcasting system came out a couple hours after the quake. By then we had most of the statistics.
The govenor (who's really nice) was at one of the hotels right near the epcicenter and the national guard was doing a practice emergency drill today so they were already in action.
Parts of Hawaii on the Big Island has fallen into the ocean..... but that's t/b expected. A big sink hole opened up on one of the roads there and at the time, they couldn't see the bottom but some smoke was seen coming out of it. C/b a lava tube. Some lady reported her toilet exploded!!! Ok, there's a joke t/b told about that one but for now at least she is safe.
If there are any other MBer's out there, we would like to hear from you all. Just to know u guys are ok.
Aloha, L.

Personally I think it is North Korean sabre-rattling. piojitos, Funny you should mention. That theroy was on the radion by some callers. However, the epicenter was less than 20 miles off shore. We'd be dead if it was anything nuclear. Btw, the big ialand has periodic rumblings due to the volcanic activity. It's just this shaker was on the side farthest from the activity and closer to the oldest part of the island. Nikko, please let us know when Leilana & Twyla check in. Haven't heard from them in a while. Hugz, L.

To all, thanks for your concern. As of right now, I don't know of any MBers in the quake region. I checked on a few of my clients out there and for the most part, they are ok. I got a few relatives out there we are waiting to hear from them.
Thanks for the update Nikko. Tell the girls I said hi and let Twyla know I am still waiting t/b invited for a game of golf or something fun. It's probably too embarassing to take me on a golf course. I only do the minitature kind. LOL!!!
I am waiting to see if Steadfast & Commited will let us know how he is doing. He's a few miles away, maybe if I throw a stone with a slingshot, I can hit his house.

When I was a little girl, my mother blamed me for an earthquake that shook Honolulu and rattled pictures on the wall of the room where she lay bedfast after an operation. Fortunately, I was no where near this one and nobody has accused me of anything.

t&l Since the quakes have been quotes as being in the 50s, 70's and 80's....u must be either 50, 30 or 20. LOL!!! The quake is nothing compared to dealing with the A. At least the quake shows recovery much sooner. In our case it was fortuate the quake happened Sunday morning. Better yet, the Governor was staying in a resort near the epicenter so she got 1st hand sights of lots of the damage. Then the National Guard was doing a practice emergency drill.....so they were at the ready when it hit. No such thing as a good time but better then than this morning. Say T, howz your family ova' hear? L.

I guess I'm almost three 20s, two 30s, or one 50+8, then. I read a list in the paper of the moderate to major earthquakes in Hawaii, going back to the 1800s. There was one in '51, and then none until the 70s, after we'd moved to California...so we missed out on all the signficant stuff, and what I got blamed for wasn't even big enough to make the news. How demeaning!
I should call my friend in Kapaau and see how they're doing. Most of the folks we know are on Oahu, since that's where we lived the whole time we were there. I grew up on Pensacola St. I read that the power was out on the whole island of Oahu. Is that true? Hard to imagine. It'd be like going back to live with Kamehameha the Great, if you ignored the high rises and freeways. Even as dark as the old Pali Highway was late at night in the 50s, there was still a little artificial light available. I can't even picture the whole island going black.
Glad you're OK. Back in my day, we called tsunamis "tidal waves." (Are you old enough to remember that?) There was one on the Big Island when I was young, if I recall correctly (not a guaranteed thing anymore). But Oahu was a pretty safe place. With electricity!

Hey T,
I didn't know what a tsunami was. We called 'em tidalwaves' too! The one that happened was in the 40's in Hilo right? My dad tells that story of how some survivors rode right through the Maui channel and ended up around bend past Hawi and near Mauhukona (sp???).
Oahu with no power? We gotz 'em tiki lights. Oh yea nowa days it's the battery operated kine. The big seller now are those radio, clock and light battery powers one's with the crank so even if you battery dies you can crank it up and keep some power.
The sad thing was civil defense was slow. The only real radio station was KSSK. Mike & Larry stayed on most of the day. Those old buggahs did a good job. They fielded calls even from da' mainland. The TV station said some were listening in via the internet and text messaging the info about our local info to residents here.
The moonlight that tried to shine inbetween the heavy clouds gave some light. Maybe Wakiki got some light that way.
As for us, the Leeward coast was bathed in darkness. Getting gas with no light at the station was an interesting experience. I went to get gas and then H went. Within less than 1 hour, our credit union called us to make sure our cards weren't ripped off (we could use the charge machine but no lights - Go figure). Anyways, I assured the lady I had indeed charged for some gas and she could see both transactions. That's about the most venturesome I got that day.
I think because most locals here never really experienced a quake it was a new thing. Yet many PI's from da' flipside of the world (PI land) have been through many quakes and of course us CA guys.....so it wasn't too mind blowing.
Oahu's downfall may be if they keep building new stuff on this rock. One day....... that's why I don't buy a beachfront house. Oh yea and the 1.2 mill is a bit above my budget. LOL!!!
I neva' see any menehune's though. Just those pesky gecko's. Even the Cakaroach's are hiding. Must be those centipedes when eat 'em up. LOL!!!
One lady said the dogs in her neighborhood started howling. Our street was kinda quiet, so not sure about that theory. I think the birds get real quiet just before an earthquake. Just wish the myna bird could speak pidgin and give us more of a warning.
aloha, L.
