Sorry to ask here, but there are no PMs allowed on this forum...
Believer, can you recommend a charitable organization where people can buy livestock for poor people? This is for a Christmas gift.
Many thanks!

I'm not believer but I'll bet if you Google "Heifer Project" you'll find what you're looking for.
Good luck. Mulan

Grownup - I don't know. I do it privately. But it is so much fun!! Now there are 6 cows, and I'm going to go down and see them this summer.

Ok, so how do you do it privately?
Is it as obvious as to just make friends in Mexico, then buy them a cow?
How do you make friends in Mexico? Just go there?
How do you know where to buy a cow?
I guess we get so used to organizations that it's hard to step outside the box and know how to do it all by ourselves.
(Have you thought about starting an organization?)

Neak -
I live in a very humble home, in a humble part of town. A lot of my neighbors are from Mexico. Over the years I've made friends, and met some wonderful people.
So now I know people that actually live in Mexico, the very poorest part. They live miles from the nearest city (an 8 hour walk). To show you how isolated they are, one of the guys I knew here, who went back to Mexico had a wife who was expecting a baby on Thanksgiving this year. He was working in another part of Mexico, and when she went into labor, something was wrong. The midwife was with her and knew that the baby and woman might die, so she took a knife and did a caesarian - no anesthesia, probably no antiseptic, etc. Anyway, mom and baby are doing well. But mom was had contracted dengue from a mosquito bite, and the baby was small. She was due 11/25, and was only 5 pounds. She was born 6 weeks early.
I could go on and on. I forget if you know that I'm an evangelical Christian. My church prepares us to be God's hands in this world. We believe that you don't necessarily have to become a missionary, the Lord will put people in your life.
So far my boys and I have bought cows, helped build a church, and helped build a house for a family. I went to Mexico last year and saw the church and the house. We are just passing on a tiny bit of the blessings that the Lord has given us.

Wow! Sometimes I forget how rich we really are, even those of us in modest circumstances, at least as America defines modest.
I am in complete agreement with you that we are supposed to be God's hands, and that if we open ourselves to His leading, He will put people in our path that we are to help and bless, with our own hands.
Maybe I just need to listen better. It is easy to believe something is true, but much harder to allow it to affect how we live our life.
